| Our House... on the corner of our street.. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| One of the first things that happened in 1999 was the purchase of our new home. We'd moved to Hammond IN from our little Chicago apartment. Now we have this 6,000 sq. ft. Arts & Crafts Style home that we LOVE! As you can see, it's a bunglaow style home. It was built in 1918 with a partially finished basement and a somewhat finished attic. There are four gables and a fireplace. What I love the so much are the hardwood floors through most of the house. However, some of it was partially covered with this heavy-duty, industrial linoleum, but slowly we'll be taking care of that. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| Actually, our entire house is one project after another, but with Doyle being the handiest guy on earth, I don't think that's going to be a problem! Since we'd moved in February of '99, we knew we had a lot to do since we planned to have our wedding at the house. (oh yes, by the way, we started planning our wedding once we bought the house, but we didn't buy the house until after we got married. Confused? You should be! But that's another story... click here to read about it.. Anyway, we moved into the house on Saturday, February 6th, and the moving gods must've been pleased because it was a balmy 60 degrees that day. Not bad for a Chicago winter! |

| House in progress | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| The following Sunday, after a day of shopping and getting to know the new neighborhood with my friend, Sandra, I came up the back stairs and was face to face to a very dirty Doyle with a head full of plaster. Covering the doorway with an innocent look on his face he said with a smile, "you're gonna be mad at me". I walked through the doorway and found the kitchen demolished! The cabinets were off the walls, the plaster was all over the floor and the kitchen was a mess! Suffice it to say, it was a big surprise, but by the time we had our housewarming party on Feb. 27, we had new walls covering our new wiring and a fresh coat of paint in my brand new kitchen. I gotta admit, it was impressive. Click on the link above to see the house in progress. Doyle got to work on the kitchen right away and we'd ordered cabinets. We have a working kitchen now, and re-using the sink & counter-top until we can get new appliances. We have our eye on stainless commercial type look to complete our kitchen. Click here for an example. When we found out we'd be having guests stay at our house, Doyle decided to expand and finish up the bathroom we have in the basement. Our house has one full bath and 3 other half-baths! So we planned on a custom shower for our extra guests. With the help of our friend, Warren, they demolished the old walls, recycled the old pine flooring from the kitchen for the new bathroom floor, put up new walls, & a ceiling, and re-positioned the plumbing. It felt like living in "This Old House"! Anyway, by the time the guests were to arrive we ran out of time and the new bath was only partially finished. The commode works, so the guys are able use it after watching a movie on the big screen downstairs. That's now our designated "entertainment"room, complete with a pool table and dart board! We're still in the process of finishing everthing up, but we're not as rushed as in the beginning. I have to say, I'm extremely proud of Doyle for doing all the work that he'd already done in the house! |

| Since the wedding, we've slowed down a bit.. We are accumulating our tool collection and Doyle's finished building up his shop. I really don't mind the break, since we really needed time away from it. (Or should I say Doyle needed a break from it!) But in the meantime, we're now catching up with the day to day business of life. | ||||||||||||||||||||||

| May, 2001 We've put a stop to the kitchen re-model because we've decided to expand into the back bedroom for more storage, and a breakfast nook. With the help from our friend, Warren, Doyle has knocked down part of the wall connecting the back entry way and the back room closet. He'd also taken down the chimney that the boiler and hot-water heater vented out from, to open up the space even more. Of course, in doing that, he had to re-rount the vent and patch the hole in the roof that was left from the previous chimney. The bricks have been taken down all the way to the basement. Speaking of basement, Doyle had also moved the washer and dryer so they'd be against the wall and not in the center or the washer/dryer room. Of course, to do that, he had to re-route the sink, drain and plumbing. Soon, he'll be working on taking down the rest of the wall in the second bedroom, but at the same time, we've made some major purchases (including a pc and eventually some engineering software) and re-couping some expendatures, and thinking of the design. |
