GARNER - Roy Jones Walker Jr., 83, died Thursday, June 24, 2004, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel, Garner. Burial to follow at Montlawn Memorial Park. Born in Granville County, N.C., he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on his 21st birthday. After training as a bombardier at Redstone Arsenal, Ala., and Ft. Drum, N.Y., he was assigned to the 362nd Fighter Group, 378th Fighter Squadron. Immediately upon completing training, his unit went to Normandy. He served for three years. Roy and Alice were married, May 19, 1951. They had one son, Ken, who was Roy's pride and joy. He instilled a love of the land and farming to his son. He loved the simple pleasures of life; the company of good friends and family, walking his farm, tending his cows and could usually be found up at Ken's Produce straightening the produce and plants or merely sitting and visiting with friends. Roy will be deeply missed by his friends and family. Roy served as a mail carrier in the Garner area with the postal service for 35 years. He was a volunteer with the Garner Fire Department from 1976 to 1996. He could often be found cooking up a hardy breakfast for the firemen returning from a fire or accident call. Roy was a charter member of Turner Memorial Baptist Church. Surviving: his wife of 53 years, Alice Woolard Walker; son, Ken Walker and his wife, Lynn of Garner; sisters, Annie Lou Andrews of Durham, Charline Walker of Raleigh and Rosalind Woolard of Raleigh; brother, Norman Walker and wife, Jackie, of Garner; granddaughters, Ashley and Amanda Weathersbee. Roy was the son of the late Roy Jones Walker, Sr., and Viola Wheeler Walker. The family will be at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner, from 6 to 8 p.m. today. PRYOR CHARLOTTE - Gwen Pryor passed away on Monday May 26, 2008 at Sardis Oaks in Charlotte with her family at her side. She was born on January 6, 1918 in Oxford to Joseph Graham and Evelyn Abbott Wheeler. Her siblings were Joseph Graham Wheeler, Samuel Edwin Wheeler and Nina Delores Wheeler all of whom preceded her in death. She lived in Oxford all of her life prior to moving to Sardis Oaks in 2000. She attended Meredith College and later married Dr. Ballard Norwood on June 25, 1937. They had three sons: Ballard (Buddy) Graham, Richard Neil and Beverly (Bev) Watkins. After Dr. Norwood's death in 1957, she later married Henry Pryor who also predeceased her. Over the years she was active in various clubs and activities in Oxford and Granville County where she enjoyed numerous lifelong friends. She greatly valued these relationships and the many happy years that she spent in Oxford with friends and relatives. Gwen was proud to be one of the oldest living members of the Oxford Baptist Church. She retired from the Granville County ASC where she was a long term employee. She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-laws, Buddy and Jane Norwood of Charlotte, Bev and Bernie Norwood of Cleveland OH, and Richard (Neil) and Ginny Norwood of Windermere, FL. and grandchildren, Ryan Neil Norwood of Las Vegas, Nev. and Megan Gwendolyn Norwood of Los Angeles, Calif.. There will be a visitation for family and friends at G. T. Eakes Funeral Home, 106 Clement Ave. Oxford, on Wednesday May 28 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Services will be at Oxford Baptist Church, 147 Main St., Oxford at 11a.m. on Thursday May 29 followed by burial in Elwood Cemetery.
