LAKELAND -- Mrs. Malise W. Beerman, a retired guidance counselor at Lakeland High School, died of pneumonia Monday (Nov. 24, 2003) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was 84. "She always liked to teach," said her daughter, Ann Jowers of Jackson Hole, Wyo. Born in Baxter, Tenn., on April 29, 1919, she came to Lakeland from Plant City 44 years ago. She received her bachelor's degree from Florida Southern College, and while teaching sixth-grade full-time at Lime Street Elementary, she obtained her master's degree from the University of South Florida. She taught at Lime Street Elementary for 10 years before joining the staff at Lakeland High School, where she was a guidance counselor for 15 years until her retirement in 1984. Mrs. Beerman led an active lifestyle until recently, participating in water aerobics at the YMCA and joining her friends on a weekly basis for their Tuesday prayer group. She also enjoyed reading, music and spending time with her cat. "She was very musical. She played the piano by ear," Jowers said. "Her main focus was her family. She was a lady of high morals and values," she said She belonged to the Retired Teachers' Education Association and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a charter member of the United Methodist Temple, where she sang in the choir for 40 years and belonged to the Rachel Circle. Mrs. Beerman was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Carlyle Davis Beerman, in 1999. In addition to her daughter, she is survived by her daughter, Betty Hartman, Lakeland; sons, Dave Beerman Jr., Lakeland, Robert D. Beerman, Lakeland; brothers, A.R. Ward Bowie, Bowie, Md., Dr. James Ward, Rome, Ga.; five grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Temple.
