He was counted in a census in 1880 in Lauderdale Co., Tennessee.

He was named after his paternal grandfather, John Abraham Glimp, who migrated from Amsterdam, Holland. The name of the community of Glimp, in Lauderdale Co., Tenn., takes it's name from Esq. John Abraham Glimp who was in the vicinity as early as 1850. "It isn't known if he established his sotr before the Civil War or shortly after. But it was there as early as 1870, if not before. The store sold mostley groceries and whiskey. Oxen and mules were used in those daysto haul supplies from Fulton, on the Mississippi River, to Glimp. It took several days to make the round trip to Fulton and back. The men slept in the big hogsheads on the river dock while staying over and getting supplies.
Al Lea was a merchant at Fulton then. Probablythe first Glimp store was located in front of his home. The only markers left today are two large oak trees, which stood in their front yard. It was located at the forks of the three roads that lead to Ripley, Henning, and Fulton. The store wa facing the Ripley Road. This must have been a gathering place for men of the community. Many stories have been told, some funny and some sad, that took place near there. It was told that when John Abraham Glimp became magistrate he was unaware of some of the duties he would have to perform - such as performing marriages. Prior to the Civil War colored people were not married by magistrates. Shortly after his election the first couple to come to him to be married was a colored couple. He was so taken by surprise that he picked up the ALMANAC and performed the marriage ceremony. This couple, it was said, lived together and reared a family.
Mrs. T.N. Wakefield, a daughter of John A. Glimp, told how she stood on the gate post as a child and watched[General Nathan Bedford] Forrest's army as it marched past their house before the battle on Cold Creek near Fulton during the Civil War. She said one of the soldiers put a little red cap on her head and told her to wear it. She said they could hear the awful gunfire of the battle from their house. They had to bury all their money and valuables and much of their food and meat. The family tells that John A. Glimp buried his money in fruit jars under the sage bushes in the garden."
John Abraham Glimp was killed by lightening, between Ripley and Glimp, while standing under a tree.

He was counted in a census 4 in 1880 in Franklin, Greene Co., Missouri. He was counted in a census 5 on 8 Jun 1900 in Jackson Township, Greene Co., Missouri.

It is possible (and more likely considering that the name Henry passed down in his descendants) that his parents were Henry and Cecelia Wheeler. When the 1850 census was taken, James T. and wife Nancy were living in District #4 in Limestone Co., Ala., very near Henry Wheeler. Also in the household was a 5 year old James Wheeler, born in Tenn. Was this possibly a son by a first wife or was he a sibling to the two young people in the Henry Wheeler household?
This was during the period of the Civil war. The family located at Hickory Barrens, and secured one hundred and forty acres of good land in that vicinity, where Mr. Wheeler carried on general farming. During the war he was a private in a Missouri regiment in the Union army [James T. Wheeler served in the Union Army. He was listed in Co. I and Co. G of the 1st Missouri Cavalry.], later being promoted to corporal and was honorably discharged and mustered out as such. He saw considerable service and had a horse shot from under him in an engagement. He was in St. Louis at the close of the war. He enlisted on the road from Tennessee to Missouri and his wife continued on to Greene county, where he joined her after the war and resided the rest of his life.

From full pension records obtained by James R. Wheeler with National Archives request form F678318 in May 2004 [the following was sent by Jim Wheeler of Joplin, Missouri]:
The pension records are extensive and cover 110 legal-sized pages. They reveal long and sometimes contentious paperwork involving James T. Wheeler's disability pension. During a skirmish with rebel forces near Bentonville, Arkansas, on September 9, 1864 his horse was hit in the nose by a musket ball. His commanding officer, one Lt. Shoemaker, was not with the group on the 'scout'. James T. was thrown and fell under the horse. His fellow soldiers escaped capture and managed to return him to camp where he was noted as being severely injured. The fall had resulted in a severe right inguinal hernia. While convalescing it was noted that he came down with a fever and pneumonia. There was mention of exposure to cold. He was in the General Hospital at Little Rock, AR almost 8 months, from September 16, 1864 until May 8, 1865 . He was apparently still able to function with the aid of a truss, but was discharged on May 6, 1865 'by reason of 'hypertrophy of the heart'.
James T. applied for a disability pension two years later, based on the heart problem, including testaments from two fellow soldiers that he had been healthy at the time of enlistment and 'for 5 or 6 years' prior. Lt. Shoemaker could not be located to comment. One might be inclined to speculate whether James T.'s heart disease might be related to the 'fever' he experienced (rheumatic fever?), since there was no indication of heart problems prior to the war. The hernia was also introduced as a principal factor severely limiting his ability to work because, he said, the truss was not as effective as he initially hoped. The initial pension granted him on May 7, 1865 was $6.00 per month. This increased to $18.00 in 1875, to $24.00 in 1883, was 'reissued' to $16.00 in 1886, increased to $18.00 in 1888, and finally in 1899 increased to $30.00. By 1891, his complaints had grown to include lung problems, back aches, headaches and piles.
In a pension form, certificate 83882 (Dept. of the Interior, Bureau of Pensions) dated August 4, 1898, which James T. Wheeler signed in a shaky hand, there was the following information written by another person in very clear handwriting:
wife's full name and her maiden name: 'Nancy Alexander Wheeler " " " Andrews'
when, where, by whom married: October 17, 1849 Limestone County Alabama, Rev. Lamarch
what record of marriage exists?: County record and family record
previously married: no
any children living: he listed John H, Sarah A. F, Algie M. T, Ulyssus (sic), Eliza J, Nancy E, and
Robert H. (Nancy E's birth date was listed as 12/23/1869 whereas another source had it as
4/3/1872. The birth year for Robert H. was noted as 1874, rather than 1873 from another
source.)
