Relatives said that their step-mother was very mean to the two children and that most of the time they lived with various relatives instead of at home with their father. By 1854 the family had moved back to Bedford Co., Tennessee. William apparently had some type of physical ailment, possibly asthma or some other lung ailment.
In his application for a federal pension for his Civil War service William Wheeler said that his "place of residence from the 1st day of June 1857 to June 1862 was Graves Co., Kentucky where I followed the occupations of farming and brick making. He also stated he had lived in Pryorsburg in Graves County, Murfreesboro, Nashville and Nolensville, Tennessee and Paducah, Kentucky during that time. When the 1860 census was taken he was living with the E.R. Arnold family at Bushnells Creek in Rutherford Co., Tennessee. He was working as a laborer.
William was back in Graves County by 1 June 1862 when he enlisted in the Union Army at Paducah, Kentucky. After contracting measles, and because of his physical condition, he was honorably discharged at Bolivar, Tennessee in August or October 1862. After his discharge and marriage he went to Johnson Co., Illinois where he lived until after the war was over. They moved back to Graves County for several years then moved to Howell Co., Missouri where he lived out the remainder of his life.
Records show that he operated a brick kiln, farmed, and worked at carpentering. Because of his physical condition he was granted a pension for his brief Civil War service.
William married (1) Margaret M. Anderson about 1862/1863 in Graves Co., Kentucky. Margaret was born 1 about 1837 in Kentucky. She died about 1869 in Howell Co., Missouri.

In 1920 he was living with his daughter Elvira. In 1930 he was living with his daughter Annie in Hale Co., Texas.
