NEW YORK (Variety) - Miramax Films has signed up-and-coming filmmaker Greg Mottola to direct Drew Barrymore and Ben Stiller in "Duplex," a black comedy that will begin production in the fall.
Barrymore and Stiller will play a New York couple whose dream of moving into a coveted duplex apartment is within reach. They just have to kill the sweet little old lady occupying the space.
Mottola made an acclaimed directing debut on indie comedy "The Daytrippers," about a Long Island family's road trip to New York.
Last fall, Miramax signed Larry Doyle, the longtime supervising producer of "The Simpsons," to write the screenplay. Under that deal, the film will be a co-production between Stiller and his Red Hour Films partner Stuart Cornfeld, and Barrymore and her Flower Films partner Nancy Juvonen.
The pairing was made by Miramax co-president of production Meryl Poster, who'd been trying to team the actors in a comedy for a long time. Barrymore's sweet onscreen nature and Stiller's success playing an ordinary man put into absurd situations in recent hits "Meet the Parents" and "There's Something About Mary" make the black comedy ripe with potential.
Barrymore, who last starred in "Charlie's Angels," has wrapped "Riding in Cars With Boys" for Penny Marshall. She and Juvonen are developing a sequel to "Charlie's Angels" and a remake of "Barbarella," both scripted by John August.
Stiller most recently directed and starred in the Scott Sather, and he just starred in the ensemble of the Wes Anderson-directed comedy "The Royal Tenenbaums."
