Oil: Galanum
Properties: Has a warm, woody, slightly melon-like smell. It is uplifting, soothing, and calming and is very refreshing and relaxing.

Actions: Excellent for healing blemished, grazed or scarred skin.  Also good for stress, tension, fatigue, anxiety or nervous tension.

Home uses: Massage, baths, inhalation.  When mixed with more fragrant essential oils it makes a therapeutic facial massage for blemished skin. Inhaled it has a tonic effect, but not the nicest smell on its own.

Warning: Galbanum is perfectly safe for home use as long as it is well diluted before application.

Oil: Geranium
Properties: Has a rosy-sweet, lemon and mint smell and works both as a tonic and sedative on the nervous system.  It is mildly antiseptic and a good skin soother.

Actions: It is one of the most important oils-perfect to put you in a good mood, put you to sleep,  give you energy, or relax you totally. It is good for cuts, bruises, eczema, burns, acne, broken veins and mature or dry skin.


Home uses: Massage, bath, inhalation, compress.  Apply one drop directly on cuts or bruises to speed up healing.  Added to a hot bath, it is deeply relaxing and in a cooler bath it is energising. Mixed with a carrier oil it makes an excellent, head, neck and shoulder massage.

Oil: Ginger
Properties: Has a lemony-peppery, woody-spicy smell and has  warming, stimulating, astingent and atiseptic properties.

Actions: It is good for boosting the circulation, relieve a tight, chesty cough, tummy ache, tight muscles, stiffness or exhaustion.  The astringent and antiseptic actions make it effective to warm and freshen tired feet.

Home uses: Massage, baths, inhalation, poultice.  Inhale it from a tissue to clear the head and energise the body. Use it in poultices for stiff muscles, tummy ache or a cough.  For bath and massage, it is particulary effective in cold weather because of its warming effect.

Warning: Ginger is very potent so never apply it undiluted to the skin, and use in moderation for both bath and massage.

Oil: Jasmine
Properties: The oil is deep red in colour and smells as fragrant as the flower.  It is uplifting, relaxing and will leave you in a confident and slightly euphoric mood. Good for dry  or sensitive skin and any aches or cramps.

Actions: Excellent for any depression, stress, fatigue or irritability. it is also good for PMT and is a excelllent skin softener.

Home uses: Massage, baths, inhalation, poultice, compress. Since Jasmine mixes well with most other oils it is very good to add to any relaxing bath or massage.

Warning: Jasmine is perfectly safe for home use as long as it is diluted before application.

Oil: Juniper
Properties: Smells like pine, but with a hot, peppery edge.  It is diuretic, antiseptic, uplifting but relaxing, and excellent for aches and pains.

Actions: It is best for menstrual problems, fluid retention, cramps, slow circulation and cellulite. It also has a toning effect on greasy skins or for acne, and has a calming effect for the over-stressed.

Home uses: Massage, baths, inhalation, compress, poultice.  Diluted with a carrier oil, it is an ideal massage for rheumatism, aching joints or muscles and any PMT/menstrual problems. Add a few drops to the bath for a relaxing soak that will lift your spirits. It is also a good germ-killer  to burn in a sickroom.

Warning: Juniper is perfectly safe for home use if well diluted but should never be used during prenancy as it can trigger labour.
