Let me tell y'all a little story. About a week after my engagement announcement was in the paper, I found this in my mailbox.
Now I didn't know what this was or where it came from, but there was one thing I knew for sure ... it was cool. I mean, look at that thing! A few other people gave me copies of the paper (and I thank you kindly for that), but this one is laminated WITH the dancing dog that characterizes marital bliss. It went straight to my fridge and has lived there ever since. Sometime later, I found out that Mrs. Butcher was the culprit. She never confessed, and, as a matter of fact, I don't remember how I found out; I just remember that it came through some oblique method. Are you looking for a point here? OK, let's get there. Hey, did it take a long time for Mrs. B to put this together? I would guess not ... she cut out the announcement, chose something appropriate from her available file of dancing animals, slapped them together, and shot it through the laminator. But those few short moments translated into 22 months (and counting) of fridge decoration for me. Twenty-two months of having visiting friends say, "Umm ... Tom? What in the world is this?!" Staci Lee was very taken by it. As proof, let me tell you that it is one of the few decorations in the house that was permitted to make the transition from "my house" to "our house." She also wondered where it came from. "I dunno," I said, "it was just in my mailbox. People do that at East Tipp. They're pretty cool people." There's your point. As cool as the dog is, it's not about the dog. As happy as I was to be engaged to Staci Lee, it's not truly about that, either. It's about the fact that I work with nice people. I'm glad I have something I see every time I go to the fridge (which is a lot) that reminds me of how lucky I am. Hey, do you have the ability to provide somebody's Dancing Dog? Can you sneak in and give somebody a little something to pick them up a bit? Just a few moments of your time might have a lasting impact on someone else. You could make a little something; you could slip them an inspirational or fun quote; you could throw some coins in a mailbox; or who knows what else! Any time is a great time to provide someone with a Dancing Dog, but how about this ... see if you can get away with one sometime this month. That's right; in February, identify somebody around here who needs or deserves a Dancing Dog and get on it. And don't get caught! Come on, give it a shot. It might mean more to them than you think ... |
