History and Current Funding
Since its foundation, CREAR has received funding from a variety of foreign and domestic
institutions to maintain the education, demonstration and investigation components of the
center. As with the evolution of many NGOs, CREARs sources of funding over the years
have diminished and the center has struggled to maintain itself as a sustainable entity
without the need for outside support. Currently, the center is beginning to receive a
modest amount of funding from the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources of the
Dominican Government, as the current administration is recognizing the important role the
center has in the environmental protection of the border region.
Along with this support from the government, CREAR is going through a restructuring and
reorganization process with the aim of creating a sustainable vision for the future of
the center. Although this vision will include a better use of the resources of the center
and an analysis of the production of the farm as though it were a private farm, there will
remain certain needs of the center in order to maintain the youth education programs.
Scholarships for Youth in CREAR
CREAR maintains a small scholarship fund for those
individuals and institutions which are interested in supporting the youth studying in the
sustainable agriculture/environmental stewardship education program in the center.
CREAR invites all individuals and institutions interested in supporting students
throughout their two years of study to contact Evan Fitzgerald (current Peace Corps
Volunteer in the school, email evanpfitz@yahoo.com) in order to discuss tax-deductible scholarship donations.
The current cost of supporting one student for a period of one year in the High-School
Level Agronomy Program is between US$1,300 and US$1,500. This seemingly modest
donation for a one year period covers all expenses for the student's studies, including:
2 meals a day, tuition and didactic materials (in the classroom and on the farm), and
administrative costs.
In addition to individual and institutional donations for youth scholarships, non-specific donations directed towards the the eduacation programs of CREAR are also welcome. Funding directed towards the education programs of the center are used in the following ways: purchase of didactic materials, improvement of classroom facilities, teacher training, and student exchanges in the Rio Limpio region.
