JESUS is a Greek name, since the New Testament of the Bible is translated from the Greek language.
But Jesus was not born in Greece. He was born into the world as a Jew, descended from the family of Judah,
who was one of the twelve sons of Israel. God chose the Jewish nation to bear a great message for the world.
In the Hebrew language of the Jews, Jesus is equivalent to Yeshu or Yeshua or Joshua.
This name means God saves, and incorporates part of the 4-letter Hebrew name for God,
which can be interpreted with English letters as YHWH or JHVH.
Insertion of vowels has traditionally rendered the name of God as Yahweh or Jehovah.
English Bibles often indicate the name of God as LORD (all capital letters),
but his authoritative title is Lord (one capital letter).
An example of this difference can be found in Psalm 8:
O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
(which really means O Yahweh, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!)
The Jews awaited a promised rescuer who was called Messiah in the Hebrew language.
The Messiah is translated into Greek as the Christ, and means the Anointed One (set apart for a special purpose).
The traditional Jewish religion rejected Jesus, but the followers of the Christ - called Christians - accept Jesus
as the promised Messiah because of his life and death and resurrection (i.e. rising to life after dying).
Only God himself could demonstrate that kind of power in a human life!
The coming of Jesus is considered so significant that our historical time line measures the years before
the approximate time of his birth ( BC = Before Christ ), and continues to record each date as we advance
beyond the 2000 years since he came ( AD = Anno Domini, Latin: In the Year of Our Lord ).
The world marks his birth and death and resurrection with the international celebrations of Christmas and Easter.
If God were to become human, we could reasonably expect his unique goodness to stand out :
- He would have an unusual entrance into life, unlike that of ordinary human births
- He would not be guilty of sin
- He would show godly power in miraculous supernatural signs
- He would be a distinctively different personality compared with other humans
- He would speak the greatest words ever spoken
- He would have a lasting and widespread influence
- He would satisfy the spiritual hunger in humans
- He would have power over death
Jesus is the only human to ever demonstrate ALL these characteristics.
Napoleon Bonaparte once said:
"I know men and I tell you that Jesus Christ is no mere man.
Between Him and every other person in the world there is no possible term of comparison.
Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded empires.
But on what did we rest the creations of our genius? Upon force.
Jesus Christ founded His empire on love; and at this hour millions of men would die for Him."
Jesus claimed to be God in human form and the way to enter eternal life beyond the barrier of death.
By paying the death penalty for our harmful behaviour to others (SIN, that separates us from our Creator),
he offers us the means to stop being enemies of God, and to become his friends.
We can't simply maintain that Jesus was a good, sensible and intelligent man, yet deny the Godhood he claimed.
There are only 3 options.
Was he a LUNATIC?
IF he unintentionally made false claims:
He was deluded and mad and a lunatic.
Was he a LIAR?
IF he intentionally made false claims:
He was a liar and a hypocrite and a demon and a fool (because he died for it).
Is he the LORD of life?
IF he made true claims:
He is the sovereign Lord of Life today and you can either accept or reject him.
Have you EVER hurt another person in any way? Then you need Jesus to pay for your behaviour against God.
He is the ONLY way you can be accepted by God and be counted worthy of entering his heavenly paradise.
The CHOICE is a matter of Life & Death :
The way you treat Jesus now will determine how God will treat you in the life to come.
Cut him off from your life and God will cut you off from Life forever.
Accept him as your Lord and friend, and God will accept you as his own child forever.
Want to find out some more?
Read the the story of God saving his people through Jesus in the pages of the Bible
(a divinely inspired collection of 66 books that took more than a thousand years to record).
Examine what Jesus said about himself in the 4 Gospels, and see if his deeds matched his words.
Consider carefully, and make your choice. But don't leave it too late. When you die, your time's up...
If you know that Jesus really died for you, why not start living for him?
