Untěl Uru: Getting Started Guide

If you want to get into the game and start hanging out in the 'hood, this guide is for you. It can take a lot of wandering before you actually meet some people unless you know what you're doing. Follow this step-by-step guide for the fastest way in!

Step 1: What you need

To run Untěl Uru, you will need:

Follow the instructions here to setup your UU account. You will need to give a username and password. These cannot be changed without buying a new auth key. However, your username is not the name you will use in the game - its just a login name.

In order to install UU, you will need to do it over a fresh install of Uru: Ages Beyond Myst.

  • If you want to keep your existing single-player game, you must install a new copy of Uru from the original CD in a new location. This is the only way to play single player after installing UU.
  • If you don't ever want to play the single-player, or any expansions, uninstall Uru, and reinstall it in the same place.
  • If you like, you can backup your single-player characters by copying the "sav" folder to a backup location. They cannot be used in UU.

Now install the UU client program over your fresh install of Uru.

Step 2: Signing In

Start Untěl Uru's program and you will see the following screen:

Untìl Uru Login Screen

Enter the name and password you gave when you registered UU.

You will need to select a shard (Server) to play on. Each shard is run by a different member of the community, and has totally separate players. Although you can change shards whenever you want, the choice is rather important since you invest a large amount of time setting up each shard.

If your connection can handle it, I would recommend one of the larger shards, such as Tapestry or Guild of Greeters, so you can meet lots of people. But feel free to try out all the shards until you find one you enjoy.

Note: Each shard has slightly different rules and settings. Some shards may have certain puzzles done for you to make it easier. As you explore, keep this in mind.

When you login, you will see the next screen:

Untìl Uru Avatar Creation Screen

This is similar to the regular Uru setup screen. Type in a new name - it may be the same as your account name, but doesn't need to be. This is the name people will see you as in-game. You may create as many avatars as you wish.

Important: DO NOT try to import characters from single-player games. This caused a tremendous amount of trouble when Untěl Uru first began, due to expansions and other factors. Now most shards have banned importing, but you should be responsible and not do it. It can potentially corrupt the entire shard. (Most of the shards have had to reset at some stage because of this).

Once an avatar is created, you should check out all of the tabs, and configure the game to your liking (particularly, you may wish to increase the graphic settings). Remember, if you had Uru installed already, you will lose all of your settings.

Press the "Play" button.

Step 3: Avatar Creation/The Cleft

Avatar Customisation screen

Once the game starts, it will be exactly the same as in single player Uru until you get to Relto. Create your character, and press the "Uru" button to start the game. If you don't know how to get through the cleft, try a walkthrough around the Internet.

The opening to the game

Play through the cleft as usual. Speed tip: at the start, remember to turn around and touch the journey on the back of the "No Trespassing" sign. When you enter the actual cleft, check the tree at the end first. On some shards, the tree will be opened for you. On others, the power may already be on. All of these wil save time.

Step 4: Relto and the KI

Once on Relto, you could link straight to the 'hood. However, without a KI, you won't be able to communicate properly, or use the Nexus. Therefore, you should link to Gahreesen first to get your KI. This picture shows how to get to Gahreesen:

The location of the Gahreesen pillar in Relto

Push the hand symbol on the pillar, then link through the Gahreesen book. Once there, leave the room you are in, and turn right (note the sign telling you to do so). Enter the first room on your right. The following diagram shows where to go next:

The way to the KI dispenser

Once you enter this room, you will see a large blue circular device. Touch the centre of this device to get your KI.

You can open your KI by clicking the KI icon in the bottom-left corner, or pressing F2. You can open the full KI screen (shown directly above) by pressing F2 again. This allows you mail, imaging, and communication functions beyond the scope of this document.

You can close the KI by pressing the small button at the bottom, or by pressing F2 again.

Now walk over to the nexus book, as shown, and link through it:

Step 5: From the Nexus to the 'hood

At the nexus, place your hand in the KI hole to activate the display. Choose "Public Links" to finally gain access to the list of 'hoods. Choose one with a few people in it.

The Public Links section of the Nexus

As the above diagram shows, the UruObsession hood has 7 people, and the Institution hood has 5. You can even sort by population by clicking that heading.

Choose a 'hood, click the circular button at the top, and you'll see the 'hood book. Finally, you are ready to experience Untěl Uru!
