I created this page just for the parents. Hopefully, you will find the answers to any questions you might have concerning how our class works. As always, you can always call the school at 393-4585 to set up a conference before or after school or you may email me at any time. I check my email as often as my time will allow.
HOW I HANDLE BEHAVIOR: Sometimes it is necessary for us to regroup, or recollect ourselves before participating in an activity. I give a warning to the student at the first sign of any problems. If the behavior continues, I will take minutes from certain activities by asking the student to sit in the power chair. In the power chair, the student has the chance to squeze a stress ball, watch the aquarium, or watch the sand timer as they wind down and power up for learning. I do not emphasize this as a punishment, but as a place to regroup and regain the ability to take part in the activity. As a teacher of 20 something five year olds, I understand the importance of alone time as a time to gather your thoughts.
HOW I HANDLE TAKE HOME FOLDERS AND HOMEWORK: My take on homework is not what a lot of parents expect from a teacher. I believe that homework is nothing more than an opportunity for parents to communicate with their child to see what they've done at school. As a parent, I know the frustration of asking a child, "What did you do at school today?" and getting a reply like, "I dunno..." I think that homework should also support what I am doing in class. It shouldn't take anymore than five to fifteen minutes of your evening but will of great importance to your child's success!
PERSONAL ITEMS POLICY: Please leave all personal items at home. Our classroom contains a variety of items to keep us busy during the day. BIRTHDAYS: Birthdays are very special days for this age group! You are allowed to send treats for the class during our lunch period. However, since Shadow Oaks is a Healthy School, I encourage parents to bring fruit juices, all natural or sugar free popsicles, and mini cupcakes. VISITORS: Parents are always welcome to eat lunch and participate in special events at Shadow Oaks! With this age group, it is important to provide a consistent routine and structured envioronment. They need to learn how to deal with being away from their parents during the school day. While this is difficult for both parent and child, I strongly encourage you to make your goodbyes as brief as possible and wait until September to come eat lunch with your child. Please visit the link below for information on the first days of school and how to deal with seperation anxiety with young children.
