Location and boundaries

  • The region is situated in the heart of Mindanao in the Philippines, sprawling over 9,856.5 square kilometers. It has a total land area of 14,571.3 square kilometers, with extensive coastlines, valleys and mountain ranges.
  • It is accessible by sea, land and air transportation to Manila, Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos, Zamboanga and other major cities.
  • Known for its river system, the region is the catch basin of Mindanao. The system is a rich source of food, potable water and energy production. The longest river in Mindanao, and the second longest in the Philippines, is also found in the region, the Rio Grande de Mindanao in Cotabato.
  • Central Mindanao is rich in fertile soil. It is referred to as the Rice Granary of the South. Most of the region's land is used in agriculture, amounting to 955,211.5 hectares. Its major crops are rice and corn, coconut, banana, mango, rubber, abaca and sugar.
  • The climate is tropical with an average daytime temperature of 35 degrees Celsius. It is in a typhoon-free zone.
