I should be leaving but i'm not ready to go!

Downtown this past weekend for a rock show! THE TREWS, freaking awesome rock n roll act, played Junctions, and we were there! What a kick ass show! The guys rocked the joint something fierce... the bar was kinda the shits for such a large crowd, but the band was worth it. The guys did everything off of their debut album, plus some Zeppelin, and some FREAKIN BLACK CROWES!!!! YES!!! They tore out an awesome rendition of "Kickin' My Heart Around"! Had a brief chat with the singer after the show, turns out he's a huge Crowes fan. Got the guys to sign my copy of the CD and grabbed a t-shirt! WOO! Great bunch of guys i must say, approachable, pleasent folks... I felt like a shit heel knocking on the dressing room door after the show... but they loved it. Can't wait to see em again!

"There ain't no comin' back!"

Back in '94 a little read comic book spawned a film which would go on to become poster boy for the goth movement, and raise Brandon Lee from 2nd rate B-movie action guy to legend, unfortunately it was also the film which got more hype for being responsible for the lead actor's death... I'm speaking of course, about THE CROW. I'd been a fan of the comics being the comic geek i was at the time, and was nothing shy of disgusted when it was announced that Brandon Lee would be playing the lead character, a guy named Eric, victim of a vicious attack which killed both he and his girlfriend. The story goes, that sometimes, a Crow can bring a spirit back, to make the wrong things right. Eric is ressurected one year after his death, and what follows is a 48 hour whirlwind of vengeance against the group of goons who killed his betrothed.

It had been a while since i've seen the film, years in fact, even though the DVD has been on the shelf for a while... And without the memory of the Crow-mania that struck the fringes of society back in the mid-90's coloring my thoughts, i was able to sit back and really soak this up. It is truely one of the single most unique and beautiful pieces of film in existance. What is simply a 70's-styled revenge flick in principle is elevated by the unique and poetic approach to the writing, the amazing cast of characters unlike any seen in this sort of film, and the amazing breakout performance of one Brandon Lee. Brandon plays Eric Draven with a quiet sullen majesty, and yet there are moments where he explodes with emotion, anger, rage... He truely captivates, showing incredible range, setting himself up as a truely dramatic actor of top tier quality, all this after crap like Laser Mission and Showdown in Little Tokyo, well done... Such a shame that his flame would be snuffed out in the final days of shooting, when the tip chipped off of a blank cartridge, and was fired from a prop gun into his abdomen, mortally wounding him.

I must also mention the performances of Top Dollar, played with chilling evil, by Michael Wincott (a fave character actor of mine, also seen in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Strange Days, and The Three Musketeers), T-Bird, played by another relative unknown, David-Patrick Kelly, and ever reliable Ernie Hudson as ex detective Albrecht. The entire cast though really shines, with not a weak link in sight. While it's definitely a violent and disturbing tale, there's a poetic majesty that surrounds this film, and makes it more than worthwhile.

SWAT - Action at its finest!

Another big action flick this past week... SWAT featured on my "best of 2003" list in both the movies and DVD's department. It's one of those films i keep coming back to every few weeks, and i freaking love it every time. Colin Farrell, despite the whole bad boy image, is one of the cooler up-and-comers in hollywood these days, and i love him here. Sam Jackson sleepwalks for the most part, but what elevates this film is the strength of the writing. It hearkens back to the 80's, and the glory days of the cop-action flick. Gone are the over the top spectacles of the 90's, or the completely rediculous stretches of more recent films (like say, Miami cops hopping on a helicopter and launching offensives in Cuba!). SWAT also takes it's sweet time with the characters, giving them some personality and background not usually seen in this sort of film... The opening sequence is just plain awesome, and when the action heats up again towards the end, the film just plain rocks! Well done stuff all around!

"Stealth Action Redefined!"

Well after a long standing off again-on again affair with Star Wars: KOTOR, one of the very finest titles of 2003, i've finally settled in with some xbox games after a long period of inactivity (the poor poor PS2 deserves a little holiday). Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow was released last week, and caught my attention instantly. I was a huge fan of the original, having played a good chunk of it on the PS2 (I was between Xboxes when the Splinter Cell hype first hit). And decided to take the plunge and pay the quid to grab up the first one for the 'box to fill out the library a little bit. Well to say the least, i'm freakin hooked! I'm really quite suprised at the differences between consoles... The Xbox version features some very different design features, increased difficulty, and a different visual style to a lot of the levels... The PS2 version is technically identical, maintaining the excellent lighting and level design, but the ps2 version, stylistically is somewhat more sterile, while the xbox's environments feel signifigantly more "real" and a little less theatrical... The PS2 also does a better job of carrying the storyline with some great cutscenes, while the xbox version keeps the story somewhat ambiguous. The ps2 version also makes the controls somewhat more user-friendly.

Well after getting waist deep in the original, the sequal was a no-brainer... Pandora Tomorrow is a freaking beautiful piece of work! The graphics are absolutely beautiful! And the game design features all of the control updates found in the PS2 version of the original... I haven't been able to dig into the very signifigant multiplayer mode yet, but the single player game is just fucking unbeliveably good stuff! This is a must-have, arguably the best game of 2004 thus far, but not without stiff competition from:

Champions of Norrath - about to put the big kibosh on this one... the end is nigh, and man what a ride it has been!

Everyone i know wears a black halo!

On a bit of a TREWS kick again... what a great freakin album... I need to buy some new music soon... maybe The Eagles of Death Metal...

The Return of the Web Spoltlight!

Yes... Again with the blogs... this one however is definitely worth the trip... this Blog belongs to a very good friend of mine, the one guy i've known longer than pretty much anyone else i hang around with... and the guy is just too fucking talented to be allowed to live... so i think i'm gonna kill him one of these days :) (Just kidding Russ... or am i?) Anyway, check out da mad skillz on dis biatch yo!
