Where the name comes from...

My name is Steve, and in my heyday i would post on several boards, and play stuff like QUAKE II under the alias "Eldorado", i am also a huge Indiana Jones fan, hence... "Eldorado Steve"... you don't like it? You think it's cheese? well Deal with it pal, it took me three weeks of thinking and this was all i could come up with for a title for this site dammit!

I Hate Technology!

We just got a new computer! Woo! Tonight will be a joyous night filled with formatting hard drives and re-installing programs! But it all gets me thinking... in like 2 months the damn thing will be obsolete, 6 weeks of happiness 6 years of misery... sometimes i hate technology. At least i'm a console gamer and not a pc-gamer, i only have to shell out bucks for new consoles every five years instead of for upgrades every six months.

Wandering soul...

Sometimes i just feel like a wandering soul ya know? Like my life really bears little consequence to anyone else... I just wander from place to place, do my best to get into the groove, and move on... I'm not troubled by it or anything at the moment, it's more of a curious feeling than anything else... almost like being adrift on a calm sea or something. These feelings are probably a direct result of my other half deciding to hit the Caribbean sometime in the very near future with her mother and our daughter... (i'll remain at home... the Caribbean is pretty damn expensive ya'know!) I gave her my full blessing, it's not like it's a vacation, her sis lives down there and all, so it's a family trip, but i can't help but feel a little left out... And tonight she and her mother get to check out The Passion of the Christ while i work... a film i was pretty hyped about seeing until about a week ago, so again i feel a little "outside the loop". But then i get my bud Kev telling me i'm "like a brother" to him, which means a lot, and probably balances everything out, even though he was loaded at the time and probably menat not a word... then again... I think the cure is to just get out with the guys... and damn the consequences, it's not like my relationship at the moment is really firing on all cylinders (more like firing on 1.5 out of 8 at the moment...just barely there.) I'm not complaining or anything, i'm content and all, but i'm just kind of on auto-pilot at the moment. Anyway, enough about all of that, on to what i'm sure those precious few of you come here for, illiterate ramblings on what's been entertaining me for the last week or so.

A Lot Can Happen in the Middle of Nowhere...

Caught FARGO this past week, one of the films which introduced me to the wonderful world of the Brothers Coen. These quirky filmmakers have been responsible for some of my fave films from the last number of years, among them the utterly brilliant Miller's Crossing. FARGO takes us to the wonderfully wacky world of the midwestern U.S., particularly Brainerd and Minneapolis. The story commences with a hairbrained scheme hatched by a Car salesman, involving hiting someone to kidnap his wife in the hopes that her rich father will pay out a handsome ransom and get him out of the hole. What follows is about as offbeat as it gets, striding between crime thriller and comedy, both genres the Coens are masters of. The cast of the film is top notch, with incredible performances from Frances McDormand as Marge Gunderson, 7 months pregnant police chief, responsible for investigating three deaths on a stretch of highway in her turf, and William H. Macy, as the afore-mentioned car salesman, Jerry Lundergaard, as quirky and unique a character as any who's appeared in a Coen film. While it's not Miller's Crossing, Fargo is definitely one of the better films of the Coen library, and it's combination of dark humor, quirky characters, and dark storyline make it quintessential Coen, and a good introduction to the Coen brother school of filmmaking.

This Movie Sucks! PT. II

Jack Black can be a pretty funny guy at times, and this sure as hell isn't one of em! Jackie-boy stars as Rock N Roll loser Dewy something or other, a showman guitariste who's just been kicked out of his own band and owes his nebbish of a roommate and his bitchy girlfriend 2200 dollars in back rent. What's a guy to do? Take his rommate's phone call, and steal a job as a substitute teacher at a prominent prep school of course! He discovers the latent musical talent in this gang of children being reared to become the next wave of social elite, and decides to teach them all there is to know about Rock n Roll, and put together a band the likes of which to win the big "battle of the bands!"

Well those of you who aren't asleep can rest assured, this flick follows EVERY SINGLE ELEMENT of the typical adolescent comedy, the whole "gain appreciation" angle, "be discovered a fraud" and then the ever popular "Redeem thyself through the supporting cast" climax! And while that isn't the real problem, it doesn't help any. No, the real problem my friends, is this steaming pile is just no fun whatsoever. The whole film lacks life in a big way, with the first 45 minutes crawling at a snail's pace, inching along to the next big plot revolution that you just know is coming. I'm sure Jack is really trying to grab the 12-16 year old crowd with this one, and he probably succeeds pretty much, but i just can't help but feel that the guy is wasting himself in these family friendly formula pieces... he could use his smarmy sarcastic characteristics to really entertain the 18-25 year old crowd, who i know would latch onto him easily based on the sales of his "Tenacious D" stuff. And Richard Linklater, after the pretentious mental masturbation of Waking Life and now this??? Well buddy you my friend are most definitely a one-trick pony (that one trick being Dazed and Confused) and you can rot in hell... that's THREE fucking hours of my life you've wasted now - fucker.

Wow! Radio Rock N' Roll LIVES!

Two new bands grabbing a heap of play in my CD player lately, the first up

Jet - Hailing from Australia, these rockers seemed to really come out of nowhere. I first heard a track called "Get What you Need" on NHL 2004 back in September, before their first CD was actually released, and they promptly vanished... Well this past month a new single popped up on the local radio stations called "Be my Girl" and upon hearing it, my two-song rule was satisfied, and this CD would have to be mine. Part AC/DC, part Stooges or Iggy Pop, and part Guns N' Roses, these guys wail like nobodys buisness!

The Trews - Another band discovered via the Radio! What the fuck is the radio doing playing REAL Rock music again! I love this! These guys are Canadian, hailing from Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland, and man do they ever rock the house! "I'm Not Ready to Go!" is the tune grabbing airtime on the FM stations, and man does it ever kick ass! It's just got that instantaneous hook that grabs you from the first note and keeps you going right to the end, and the whole CD holds up extremely well... This one should rightly be on my 2003 best of list, probably around #4 (push everything else down one... sorry Metallica) If you get the opportunity, then by all means check these guys out! I wouldn't be completely off base when i compare these guys to either Sloan or Oasis, they've got that jangly vibe, though they are a bit more distinct.

Tango down!

I've finally dug into SOCOM II's single player game, and it is a good thing indeed! Very nicely structured missions with plenty to keep you busy. It took me 55 minutes to clear the first mission alone...

Also still into Champions of Norrath, which just plain kicks super fucking ass with 4 players on the go. Myself, The Music-man Jeff G., Kev of Notanywhereland, and Andy the electric gremlin took a night and blew about 4 hours in what felt like a half hour, and didn't even finish the first act! This is by far one of the single coolest games i've played! The blessings of 2003 have continued into 2004 for us PS2 owners it seems... oh and the new James Bond title, Everything or Nothing, is hella cool as well!

Just to spread the love a little, i've given Deus Ex: Invisible war a try on the Xbox, and came away very impressed, it's the firts person shooter cyberpunk equivalent of Morrowwind without the added sucktitude... very nice... i see myself adding to the ole Xbox library sometime soon (i won't be waiting until Doom 3 / Halo 2 / Fable / whichever comes first after all!)
