Where the name comes from...

My name is Steve, and in my heyday i would post on several boards, and play stuff like QUAKE II under the alias "Eldorado", i am also a huge Indiana Jones fan, hence... "Eldorado Steve"... you don't like it? You think it's cheese? well Deal with it pal, it took me three weeks of thinking and this was all i could come up with for a title for this site dammit!

Do be do be doo...

The flu sucks, and yet, i'm running at full steam and aside from the usual flu symptoms i'm feelin fine... perculiar... that is all... i gave it to little Abby as well, she's all snuffly now, so i've re-named her SNOTS! She seems to like the change... she laughs her arse off when i call her it. Mom like boo-nose better... but hey, she's daddy's girl right? :)

"Why are they using such primative weapons?"

Part of the whole "growing up as a child of the 80's" deal is that we must all be geeks in some form or another... weather it's He-man, Transformers, Thundercats or whatever... mine, well, mine's G.I Joe, but a close second would probably be Robotech! Back in 2002 the series started appearing on DVD in these really spiffy boxed sets which retailed for anywhere from $40 to $60 plus a pop, and me, being a bit of a fanatic, had to have em all... Well while the show was intact as i remember it, the dvd's were really nothing special... not much in the way of cleanup on the show itself, and an old cruddy mono soundtrack (which to be fair is true to the source). Well this year ADV sees fit to bless us with (drumroll) ROBOTECH: REMASTERED! Cleaned up visuals and a shiny new 5.1 sound mix, but that's not all! oh no! we also get several of the more violent/questionable scenes from the original japanese versions (a complex web i'm not getting into), new opening and closing credits, and all new title effects! Wow! Sounds great! well... yes... and no... y'see, Robotech's original sound elements were in such hard shape that they had to completely re-record the sound effects for the 5.1 master, and yeah, i'll be honest, i think it sounds way better, but, this ain't the old Robotech... don't get me wrong, i ain't one of these purists who's so far gone that he thinks a shitty mono mix is better than five channels of immersive surround sound... but fairly warned be thee says i, this ain't yer classic Robotech.

Russians invaded Afghanistan? When?

In the freaking 80's that's when! THE BEAST is about the only film i've ever seen dealing with the whole Russian incursion thing. An incursion which worried the USofA so much that they started training the locals and outfitting them (covertly of course) But i'm not gonna get into that whole can of Worms. What i will get into, is the sheer awesomeness of this freakin movie... a cast of largely unknowns and a Baldwin brother are a Russian tank crew, responsible for the destruction of a native village. Lost and cut off from their division, they are forced to deal with a group of Mujahadeen rebels fixated on destroying what they call "The Beast" - the tank the Russians are currently riding in - and the steady decline of their commander's sanity.

The thing is impressively filmed by Kevin Reynolds (who would later bring us Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Waterworld, and The Count Of Monte Cristo). As one of his early films this thing shines with life and skill, beautifully shot, making The Count of Monte Cristo look pale by comparison. The performances are all top notch, though the Russian soldiers all speak in perfect American (Reynolds once stated he did that so that american audiences could identify with the crew, and so that the film wouldn't be told entirely in subtitles). This one is readily available in bargain bins, and is one hell of an overlooked gem that is worth snaping up for fans of any type of war film...

Play it again... for the first time!

we've had the Gamecube since the day the damn thing was released... and i've had about as much interest in it as i would in bedding down Bea Arthur... *shudder* Until now... Metal Gear Solid:The Twin Snakes was released this past week, and i just couldn't put the damn controller down from the get go until i had the damn thing driven into the ground. Well 10 hours later the thing was done... finito... What is Twin Snakes? Well... it is a bottom to top remake of the Playstation classic Metal Gear Solid! I'd played through good ole MGS maybe 8-10 times in it's heyday, and had been planning to do so again recently until i caught wind of the remake... Well this thing was freakin brilliant! I booted up the game, immediately hopped out of the ice cold Alaskan sea water into the cargo bay, and broke out the old book of tactics that got me the supremo rating i'd had in the old PSone game, only to get my arse immediately handed to me! Flashbacks of my very ferst go with the original MGS immediately filled my head, and, just like the first time, when i saw that game over screen i grinned wide, hit continue, and dug back in.

How can i describe the feeling of going through this thing? Lets just say you're absolute favorite film was only viewable on a 15 year old VHS tape you recorded off of an antique VCR with bad cable... then suddenly, after a while without watching it, you get the thing on a shiny new DVD with a top notch visual treatment and awesome sound... and there you have Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes... just plain fucking awesome...

Also still into Champions of Norrath, which is a staple of "Game night" and has been for the better part of a month... good gear, and some of the best multi-player around...

Part of the machine comes and wakes me from my dreams!

Amazing that i haven't mentioned SHEAVY on here yet... for years these guys were about my single fave band bar none... and while the tastes may have changed a bit, Sheavy are still one increadibly awesome rock n roll outfit... Synchronized, their most recent effort, was recorded by former Black Sabbath uber-producer Mike Butcher over in Europe, and they've had several albums released both in Europe and North America, not bad for a bunch of long haired hippies from right here in Newfoundland!!! Yes the singer's voice does bear a passing resembalence to Ozzy, but these guys are far from a Sabbath wanna-be band... maybe one small part Sabbath, a mix of Kyuss, AC/DC, and something entirely their own... they're unique, and incredibly skilled musicians... well worth checking out for anyone who enjoys a bit of 70's tinged Rock n Roll... Synchronized is one damn fine album, which goes without saying, but it doesn't have quite the same vibe as either of their previous albums, which is no huge suprise as no two were completely alike, but there are some sounds on here that i ain't crazy about, which is odd, because the tracks that do work are probably the best these guys have ever recorded! It's definitely a beast of an album, and well worth tracking down, but i'd suggest starting with "The Electric Sleep" or even "Celestial Hi-Fi" and gravitating to this one after either of those...

The Return of the Web Spoltlight!

Yes... Again with the blogs... this one however is definitely worth the trip... this Blog belongs to a very good friend of mine, the one guy i've known longer than pretty much anyone else i hang around with... and the guy is just too fucking talented to be allowed to live... so i think i'm gonna kill him one of these days :) (Just kidding Russ... or am i?) Anyway, check out da mad skillz on dis biatch yo!
