James Newton Anderson

JAMES NEWTON ANDERSON was born 14 Dec 1863 near Port Washington, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, and died of a stroke 03 Aug 1941 in Meridian, Logan County, Oklahoma. He married 16 Mar 1891 in Guthrie, Logan County, Oklahoma, to Martha Arabelle Thompson, dau of John Thompson and Sara Beene. James was born and raised on his father's farm. It is thought he was not allowed schooling past the 7/8th grade as his labor was needed on the farm. However, he continued to study and learn - there was a family joke among his children when they went to school about having to hide their books or their father would get them and wouldn't give them back. It is unknown when James left Ohio, but he participated in the Oklahoma land rush 22 April 1889. He owned a dry-goods store (Anderson's Variety Store) in Guthrie, Oklahoma and had taught himself how to repair watches, clocks, guns, bicycles, etc for extra income. He was very hard working and expected his family to be also.

James wanted his farm to be self sufficient and to that end, he raised bees for honey, sugar cane for molasses, all kinds of fruit trees, wheat which was ground for cereal and livestock for food and transportation. He is buried in the Cooper Cemetery, around 2 miles from his farm in Logan County.

James', Martha, was a small woman, 5'2" and never weighed 100 lbs. She was said to have been patient until driven, kind and self sacrificing, industrious and generous and terribly hard working. Martha and her father, John Thompson, were visiting Oklahoma when he had a heart attack. Afraid he would die and leave her alone far from any relatives, he arranged the marriage to James Anderson, whom John considered an up and coming young man, owning a store and a farm of 160 acres. She did not want to marry James Anderson as she had 'fallen in love' with Henry Morgan, a stage actor... Martha did not have an easy married life but made the best of what she had. She gave birth to sixteen children. Her first child, Alice, was born at the farm and died as a result of the cord wrapped around her neck during a breech birth. Martha's third child, Mabel, died at 15 months of a severe infection. In 1906, four children died of diphtheria, (7) Dollie Grace, (8) Ethel, (9) Homer and (10) Lillian. At thirty years of age, Martha had been married 15 years and had had ten children, six of whom had died. Her last child, Thomas, born when she was in her early 40's, died when he was 30 days old of dehydration caused by diarrhea, probably from an infection caused by unboiled cow's milk. All of her children were born in Logan County.
