| New tomb discovered at Deir el-Bersha
May 21, 2007 |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A team from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium lead by professor Harco Willems has discovered a completely intact tomb which they think to be dated to approximately 2050 BC at Dayr al-Barsha in Middle Egypt. The burial was located in a rock cut shaft in the tomb of Uky in a vast ancient cemetery on the southern hill of Dayr al-Barsha near the Nile Valley town of Minya, south of Cairo. Once discovered, this site has been under investigation by Marleen De Meyer, who carried out the excavation of the tomb. The tomb belonged to Henu, an estate manager and high-ranking official during the period lasting from 2181 to 2050 BC, being a time of political chaos in Egypt.Henus mummy was wrapped in Linnen in a huge wooden coffin decorated with hieroglyphics texts. It also contained well preserved wooden statues of workers making bricks and women making beer and pounding cereal. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Hamas and Fatah security officials traded fire at Gaza's border with Egypt on Tuesday as Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh passed through on his way to reconciliation talks between his Hamas movement and the rival Fatah group in Saudi Arabi. The 10-minute gunbattle at the border terminal caused no injuries. The passage - Gaza's gateway to the outside world - has been closed to outgoing traffic since January 8 because of Israeli security alerts. |

| Egypt: A Permanent Emergency? March 27, 2007 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| After the assassination of Anwar Sadat, emergency powers were implemented in Egypt. Recently, though, Egypt has been inching towards constitutional changes. The government says the constitutional changes will enhance Egypt's democracy and allow it to fight terrorism more effectively. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Opponents call the new changes " the death of Egypt". | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| One of the most controversial amendments, Article 179, gives the president new powers to refer terrorist cases to any judicial authority he chooses - including military tribunals whose verdicts are not subject to appeal. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| "The amendments will write into permanent law emergency-style powers that have been used to violate human rights" -Amnesty International | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
