| Egypt is the fifteenth most populous country in the world. The vast majority of its 78.8 million people (2006) live near the banks of the Nile River (about 40,000 km� or 15,450 sq miles) where the only arable agricultural land is found. Around half of Egypt's residents live in urban areas, with the majority spread across the densely populated centres of greater Cairo (the largest city in Africa and the Middle East), Alexandria and other major towns in the Nile Delta. |

| Egypt is located in Northern Africa. It borders the Mediterranean Sea between Libya and the Gaza Strip, and it includes the Asian Sinai Peninsula. The climate is hot dry summers and moderate winters because it is mainly a desert land. Egypt's natural resources are generally agricultural. They include petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, phosphates, manganese, lime stone, lead and zinc Egypt contains a total of 1,001,450 square kilometers. It borders the Gaza Srtrip, Israel, Libya, and the Sudan. Its coastline is 34,220 square kilometers as well. In Egypt there are periodic droughts, frequent earthquakes, flashfloods, a hot driving windstorm called khamsin which occurs in spring, and sandstorms. Egypt controls Sinai Peninsula which is the only land bridge between Africa and the remainder of the Eastern Hemisphere. It also controls the Suez Canal. . |

| The Nile River begins in the mountains of Africa and flows north to the Mediterranean Sea. It flows through thousands of miles of desert. After thousands of miles the river has many waterfalls and rapids called cataracts. At the delta the Nile calms down.
