WORLDREELS COSMOLOGY

IV. THE SPACE NET METAPHOR

Fifteen billion years ago at the Big Bang the submicroscopic space, the Planck realm, was curled up with all the energy that exploded. But this explosion of curled up space, the quantum vacuum, didn't break into pieces along with the energy. The strings or strands of the super tiny space stayed with the diverging energy fields but the cosmic strings did not snap. Space cannot snap and break like a toothpick. Instead the still connected strands stretched out as though made of super rubber netting and as energy diverged became a universe sized lattice -- a matrix. Stretching in every direction, following the galaxy of stars, this matrix to this day still connects the entirety of the universe. This unbroken Planck space-net remains to this day and shall always remain connected. The Planck space net comprises what I have previously termed the Planck lens. One might say the curled up sub micro space uncoiled. It can be thought of as a universal space-net in which is trapped all the energy & mass of the universe that is visible to man.

Since this hidden dimension will always remain too small to detect or measure, there is no way to grasp or understand it except by metaphor. Such a metaphor is a super rubber netting which describes the Planck lens. At the instant of the Big Bang expansion, then, all energy took flight and started what we call the arrow of time. However, the space-net remained intact as it was within the Big Bang singularity. And in this hidden dimension, as within a black hole, the space-time continuum dissolves into nothingness.

One could say that when a black hole swallows up the mass of a star it reduces, condenses, or hides that star from view. The universe began its journey in a form too small to see but with inflation and expansion when energy began to clump into particles of matter, these neutrons and electrons, functioned as magnifying devices. As matter clumps together into stars and planets the aggregate energy becomes visible. Of course the hidden, invisible portion of the universe still exists as a matrix connected like a space net. One might say the visible matter is embedded in the hidden space-net.

There are two ways in which something can become small to one's view: first by reducing its size and secondly by increasing its distance away from the observer. No one has any knowledge regarding black holes since none have been witnessed close up. Yes, astronomers have located Cygnus X-1, a star of 20 solar masses, which is said to rotate about a black hole of ten solar masses. But this one and other stars are said to be black holes due to a lack of brightness and a bigger lack of information. With the vast distance involved these huge, but tiny to view, black holes seem very much like the hypothetical tiny wormholes in the sub-Planck realm that may account for the emission of virtual electrons. The guru of black holes, Hawking, speculated that a tiny black hole, the size of one proton, would, in effect, spew out energy , releasing one of every two virtual particles created in the quantum fluctuations. In both cases, the macro and the micro, we are blessed with total ignorance. Must we then listen to scientific celebrities with their more detailed and mathematical form of ignorance?

Although astronomers have racked their brains for the location of the missing black matter in the universe, no one is satisfied with their theories. Some suggestions are that several so called mass less particles may, indeed, have mass; such as photons, neutrinos or gravitons. Other ideas are dark stars and black holes which cannot be seen. John Gribbin reports speculations that mini wormholes within the quantum vacuum might hold this missing energy. The harder question may be that even should the Planck realm contain the missing mass -- would it even count as being in this universe? This universe is said to operate on a set of universally consistent laws (symmetric and asymmetric). The arrow of forward time is said to permeate the entire universe. Would missing energy found within the Planck realm, without space or time, even qualify as being in this universe?

In a closed system of many entities there is a statistical notion called entropy (often called the Second Law of Thermodynamics) that states all matter is in a state where loss of information is continuously increasing. The entropy value (a small number means high order; a large number means high disorder) of a system is said to be the thermodynamic probability of its being ordered or disordered. Hot air will flow toward colder air but cold air will not flow toward hot air (irreversibility of flow). The flow of time in the visible world is toward increasing disorder. But the ideas of time itself is without meaning if one cannot grasp timelessness. At the quantum level where individual subatomic particles exist but for a micro-instant (too fast to be measured or computed) , there are no statistics to support the flow of time or to measure entropy. All matter could be considered as information arising out of a hidden dimension -- the Planck realm where electrons constantly emit and absorb virtual photons too fast to measure. What do physicists even mean by virtual electrons? . Virtual is being used in the state of mind where such events cannot be measured. I have discarded the notion of entropy in the Planck realm -- perhaps due to my limited imagination. Others have become wildly imaginative. In Dennis Overbye, LONELY HEARTS OF THE COSMOS, he cites John Wheeler who writes that at the Planck scale (1 centimeter divided by 10 to the 33rd power), the fluctuating quantum foam is composed of tiny black holes that are instantly forming and dissolving -- space and time has lost all meaning. The tiny black holes are packed in a number of 10 to the 100th power per cubic centimeter. Hawking and Starbinsky calculated that such tiny black holes would get horribly hot and spray out radiation and elementary particles until they disappeared. All of these speculations regarding black hole entropy are leading nowhere. The fact remains that no one has a clue as to what occurs in the jitters of a quantum vacuum, the Planck realm.

The most difficult concept to comprehend is that like the sight of stars in the night sky, most of what one sees is said to be empty space. The same holds true for the human body or any material thing. Should the neutrons and electrons composing one's body be compressed with the force in a black hole, one's body would be smaller than a grain of salt. The entire earth would take on the size of a one inch marble. When you swallow a grape you also swallow the submicroscopic sea of foamy space the grape molecules are nested in. Each and every electron in that grape is embedded in an invisible dimension too tiny for the eye to see, too small for the electron microscope to record. One is amazed to see hydroponic tomatoes grow without soil, with their roots only in water. One is amazed to see vines hanging from cypress trees whose roots don't touch the ground but rather extract their water from the air. One should be equally amazed to learn that the electrons out of which our bodies are composed, rotate in a quantum sea of energy too microscopically small to be detected by man. Within this roiling vacuum foam, our bodies' electrons are like hanging roots, being nourished with the energy electrons require for sustenance.

Philosophers have sought for the hidden realms of spirit and soul without being able to explore the hidden Planck realm. The men and women of science have offered few clues as to what lies hidden in the quantum vacuum. No repeatable experiments are on the horizon. Neither will I or anyone else ever blow up the picture that all the universe lies embedded in. We are left with only metaphor. That is why one turns to fiction, where the answers can all be fantasy as long as the characters and story is served.

Man has learned how to project moving 2-D images on the TV and movie screens and now the rush is to bring us, with special lenses and holographic chips, illusions of 3-D images. But if one wanted to project the real 3-D figures of our separate lives into real 4-D spacetime settings, illusions won't count. What is needed is Shakespear's dictum, "All the world's a stage." In other words, what we need is to frame the scenes of our separate existences here on earth. The question is how are these worldreels projected? Others want to know if these worldreel projections were intended or accidental? Physicists seem to have gotten back to the quark or string soup of the big bang. Most feel that before the big bang explosion everything was symmetrical (one force) and that accidentally, the symmetry was broken to give us the four forces that many physicists are trying to reunite: electromagnetism, gravity, and weak and strong nuclear forces. Others, more bold, hint that there may be hidden forces and symmetry in the quantum vacuum fluctuations. I lean toward the zero point energy folks who want to learn more about these tiny hidden dimensions. But I lean only with metaphor, the hidden blueprint, the super rubber space net, the Planck lens, the worldreels -- all to project matter unto the metaphorical screen, the visible space-time continuum where my fictive characters act out their scenes.
