WORLDREELS COSMOLOGY

The subject of these pages is fictive cosmology, a universe designed out of pure speculation. This is a universe where "all the world's a stage," made for a cast of fictional characters.

I INTRODUCTION

A Sci-fi writer takes the scientifically known and extrapolates -- projects existing ideas into the unknown future. There is evidence to support the big bang theory, such as the 2.7 degree Kelvin temperature of the background radiation throughout the skies. The displacement of spectral lines of starlight to longer wavelengths than normal is called redshift and indicates an expansion of the whole universe away from some past singularity of the big bang. Since I accept the big bang theory of the origin of the universe I am not presenting worldreels as any new cosmology. Although I refer to worldreels as a fictive cosmology, since there is so little experimental evidence available, I consider all existing theories of cosmology as philosophies and therefore, like mine, fictive. Ideas that offer so few opportunities to be verified by testing are simply philosophical in nature. Since worldreels so radically alters one's view of the earth and universe, I feel comfortable in referring to the worldreels cosmology. Keep in mind, however, that wordreels is intended to be only operational within the pages of my novel, INSIDE THE RAINBOW.

Since I am not writing for the physicist, in order to comprehend the new ideas in the worldreels cosmology three foundation stones must be placed; the reader must become familiar with a) the neutrino, b) the tiny Planck realm and c) the term, worldreels:

a) The electron neutrino, a submicroscopic stable (infinite lifetime) particle with no charge and a tiny weight, is emitted from nuclear fusion processes within the core of the sun. Neutrinos pass unheeded through stars, planets and everything else. Calculations are that ten billion neutrinos per second stream through every square centimeter aboard planet earth. Unlike Superman's x-ray vision they can pass through lead as easily as water; this is because matter is primarily composed of empty space. The question that physicists rarely ask is: what is a neutrinos purpose? One account compares neutrinos to spectators at a football game -- My own analogy is that neutrinos are the camera crew at the spectacle we call life -- somewhat like x-rays, they penetrate all matter, taking snapshots and thereby keeping an accurate, running record of every event, macro and micro, that has occurred in the past fifteen billion years. As light carries two dimensional images to a camera film, so neutrinos deposit a record of the 4-D submicroscopic images on what I call Planck film.

b) In my fictive cosmology I use the term, Planck film, a submicroscopic film, as a recording medium -- a film on which neutrinos deposit a record of whatever the neurtrino has passed through. The Planck film stores these blueprints of action in a manner similar to how photons, by reacting with silver compounds, store images on photographic film. What this means is that there is stored a constant submicroscopic, virtual blueprint of every event that occurs on planet earth! While the images remain in the Planck realm I call them Planck frames. After the images emerge through the Planck lens they are projected as worldreels into the visible space-time realm. The existence of Planck film in this tiny realm is a new theoretical metaphor that helps answer the question, what are neutrinos good for anyway? The Planck film unspools in the quantum vacuum area, a space so small that it cannot be magnified into view. It is a fictive realm like stepping into Lewis Carroll's looking glass world where Alice had so many adventures.

Above I used terms like Planck realm and Planck lens. Physicists use the term fluctuating quantum foam or quantum vacuum to refer to what I have shortened to Planck realm. The common usage of the term quantum vacuum only compounds the confusion since vacuum refers to totally empty space. The Planck realm is in no way empty merely because it is hidden from view. The Planck realm is filled with submicroscopic processes which, when they emerge, allow us to witness this world. The Planck realm is named to honor Max Planck, German physicist born in 1858, whose ideas put quantum mechanics on the right track. Quantum mechanics is simply the physics of the super-tiny. These tiny dimensions are almost beyond comprehension. The Planck time is the shortest interval comprehensible after the big bang, one second divided by 10 to the 43rd power (this power was reached to make account for Werner Heisenberg's uncertainty principle). In the Planck realm are tiny distances such as the Planck length which is 1.6 centimeters divided by 10 to the 33rd power (this is the distance light travels in a Planck second).

To get some perspective on how small is small consider some times and tiny distances that can be measured in the visible world. With modern laser timing such sports as sprinting, bicycling and canoeing are now measured in milliseconds (1 second divided by 10 to the 3rd power). Using giant pulsed laser bursts one can record a nanosecond (1 second divided by 10 to the 9th power) and even shorter pulses reach femtoseconds (1 second divided by 10 to the 15th power). In a femtosecond a jet aircraft in flight moves the distance of an atom. These methods of photography come no where near the short events measured in the cloud chamber of a high energy accelerator. With the energy accelerator at CERN, the Swiss and French facility, physicists have been able to detect energy with an average lifespan of 58 sextillionth of a second (58 seconds divided by 10 to the 21st power.) Yet the Planck second is still 10 to the 22nd power faster than anything recorded in an energy accelerator. To understand worldreels cosmology one must accept that important events are occurring in the Planck realm. When this blueprint of world action is assembled, worldframe by worldframe, it emerges through the Planck lens where the projected action becomes a worldreel -- visible for all to see.

Finally, let's consider a man reading a newspaper. The ink forming the words lies embedded in the Planck realm. The cells of paper the words are printed on lie embedded in the Planck realm. Every particle, atom, proton or electron leaves its fingerprint in the Planck realm. The tiny space that permeates every atom is also encircled by a space-net, a remnant from the singularity, uncurled at the explosive big bang. This space net, which connects every particle in the universe, comprises the Planck lens. The Planck lens is the dividing plane between the visible world and the forever hidden realm. Every cell in the reading man's brain is also embedded in the Planck realm. The brain interfaces directly with the Planck lens during dreams, visions, hallucinations and other trance like states of mind. The man's consciousness is a byproduct of the brain cells interacting with virtual particles swirling within the Planck realm.

c) Next, consider the term worldreels. Although much of the explanation involves submicroscopic space, as the particles clump together and increase in size to form atoms and molecules, they become visible in our micro and macro world. Within the Planck realm, the straightest path between two points is called a worldline. One says that the worldline links events in the history of a single particle. In superstring theory (see Part V below) the two dimensional path of a loop of energy moving in space time is called a world sheet. Instead of a mere point moving as in a world line, a two dimensional sheet of paper is moving in a path called a world sheet. For each passing Planck second (1 second divided by 10 to the 43rd power) arises a new world sheet. At one instant, if the total of all world sheets were connected one would see a tiny, solid three dimensional figure -- a world frame. Therefore, a worldreel is the summation of all of the moving world sheets. A worldreel is composed of the totality of the world frames, which when assembled give a panoramic view of the world for each Planck second. Every Planck second another worldframe emerges from the Planck realm to join the existing worldreels. String theory postulates that all particles are composed of identical tiny strings of energy, but each may have a different vibrational pattern. And each different pattern corresponds to a different type of subatomic particle. In order for strings to vibrate in a variety of ways (like strings on a banjo), one, two, even up to seven new dimensions of space are postulated. Worldreels cosmology avoids postulating additional dimensions since they add nothing to the metaphor of a reel of Planck film unwinding frame by frame out of the Planck realm and into the light of day. Like other cosmologies, worldreels will have nothing to say regarding who or what is plucking the strings of the banjo whose music composes the universe. It would be great to find some authority to support a cosmology, but unfortunately, beyond naive belief in fantasy, there is no such authority.

Theworldreels cosmology is built, reel after reel, with analogy and metaphor taken from the real world and universe as I view it. If this explanation isn't clear I accept my limitations. As an electronic engineer will design and draw the circuit for a TV set, describing the voltage needed, the electric frequency required, the metals needed to conduct electricity in the circuit, the type of screen on which to project the two dimensional picture -- so I want to sketch and describe a picture of the tiny model universe out of which my fictive characters emerge. To put it another way, I want to describe the Planck realm out of which my characters have emerged, and show their projection on a human size screen that readers can appreciate.

II THE RAINBOW METAPHOR

How is the universe projected into view? In the rainbow metaphor the universe is divided into two areas -- one visible and one hidden. The colored band of light in the sky is visible but how it is projected is a hidden process. Try to imagine the mystery that the rainbow presented to primitive man. Now we know the colors of the rainbow consist of light waves projected through a raindrop-prism. The air and atmosphere become a reflecting surface to send these photons (divided by wave frequency into color bands) to the human eye. The waves, then travel to the visual center of the brain for interpretation as colors. It is clear that all five human sense organs act as a detector/receptor of energy composed of waves. The human brain then unscrambles or interprets these waves into sights, sounds, touches, tastes and smells. Much of the mystery is gone because understanding destroys mystery.

For example, a newly built device, the artificial odor detector, mimics the olfactory ability of the human nose. This device is called an electronic nose or an e-nose. The e-nose has 32 sensors made of polymers which expand or contract, thereby increasing/decreasing electrical resistance. The e-nose compares and matches a pattern of electrical currents based on odors entering its antenna with existing patterns in its memory. This device can detect the odor of chemical explosives and and even identify disease by the odor of decay produced by certain bacteria. Man is well on his/her way of producing the better human odortrap. Similar devices are being engineered using miniature TV cameras to restore some kind of sight to the blind.

Once the hidden processes in the Planck realm are comprehended, everything we see and feel here on earth will become as clear as the reflection of a rainbow. The dividing plane between the visible universe and the submicroscopic universe I define as the Planck lens. The Planck lens focuses the virtual energy which has been deposited on the Planck blueprint by the imprinting neutrinos. The microscopic atomic particles are changed by the addition of this virtual energy blueprint. The images and pictures we see on the worldreels are first painted as a blueprint on the Planck film by the neutrinos. If the images detected by the neutrinos are in motion then changes in the blueprint will show this motion. How the Planck film is projected and magnified to reveal the worldreels is more difficult to explain. Without molecular and cellular growth the worldreels would be forever hidden from view. The virtual particles must congeal with existing particles. Whether one refers to these bonded energies as strings, twistors, quarks, or subatomic particles and forces is a matter of semantic style. Then these subatomic particles must combine and grow to a visible size.

When a physicist describes the atomic and subatomic quanta listed above, he/she uses such units as shape, spin, electron voltage, weight or mass, charge and lifespan of this quanta energy. These units diagram what I term detection/projection devices which show the matter which can be seen, heard, tasted, touched and smelled. I combine the two terms detection and projection because the two processes are concomitant, like the song, "Love and marriage, you can't have one without the other." A common detection/projection device that can be seen is a photon of light. Those who have energy accelerators at their disposal, who can see some pictures of subatomic particle energy trails can readily grasp the importance of detection/projection devices. Consider that a particle may perform multiple functions, some visible and others hidden. Because an apple tree provides fruit and oxygen to man, this doesn't preclude the tree from having additional unseen functions of detecting sunlight and by photosynthesis converting water (hydrogen/oxygen) and carbon dioxide into cellular growth. It is this cell growth that projects (magnifies) starches, fat and protein into viewable fruit. We often focus on only the visible processes and ignore unseen processes.

Returning to the rainbow metaphor, the entire universe is composed of energy waves analogous to the photon colors of the rainbow. On the macro level of magnification there are the photons of light striking the raindrop prisms to project a half circle of color we call a rainbow. On the microscopic level which cannot as yet be magnified there are the neutrinos of energy striking the Planck lens to project the designs imprinted on the Planck blueprint -- which we call matter. To make the metaphor pertain to all energy waves (all matter is composed of energy waves) we need a device, such as a layer of raindrops, to act as a lens to focus energy into matter. The Planck lens is such a device. The Planck lens focuses the Planck blueprint which is hidden in the ultra-microscopic realm. This virtual energy is focused and projected to become the subatomic zoo of particles physicists have collected in their accelerator detectors. I describe the subatomic particles called matter as detection/projection devices. To say it again: matter or mass is detected/ projected energy waves. Planck second, after Planck second, each worldframe is connected to flow through the Planck lens out into the visible universe. Just as all the frames on a moving reel of 35 mm movie film combine to project moving images, so the worldframes pouring out of the Planck realm combine to project the moving universe we all see -- the worldreels we all see.

What does it mean to say that a photon or light wave is part of a detection/projection device? Without light, for example, if our sun became a black hole, we would see nothing. Without light both electromagnetic and electrochemical (photosynthesis and the formation of molecules) processes would cease. A similar process goes on in the formation of heavy elements from the lighter ones -- changing hydrogen into helium. Without the photon to carry energy hither and yon we would have no earth to live on. To say it another way, without light the hydrogen proton could not detect the electron and form or project the hydrogen atom ( molecular growth) into a heavier element which we can see such as helium or iron. A detection/projection device is a process or an interaction of energy fields with electrons, protons, and neutrons which results in man's ability to see, hear, touch, taste and smell the matter surrounding him/her. An illustration in human terms is the female's egg cell detection of the microscopic sperm & chromosomes to trigger cell division and growth, thus the projection of the microscopic cell into a baby large enough to see, hear, taste, touch and smell. Phewww!

I fully realize that my attempt to use the detection/projection device as an analogy attributes a degree of causality to plants and atomic matter that readers aren't familiar with. When the reader hears the term device he/she looks for a man-made light meter, geiger counter, photo film, or cloud chamber -- not for a process of molecular growth. When the reader hears the term projection device he/she looks for a movie projector and a screen -- not an atomic or chemical reaction. But the fundamental concept is that these devices cause something new to appear. These devices need not be man-made. The sun, moon and earth can become a detection/projection device. When the moon crosses the sun's path over the earth this device causes a circular shadow to appear on the earth's surface. If one is standing in this shadow it is called an eclipse. The shadow of the moon is projected on the earth's surface. Sunlight, raindrops and the atmosphere can become a detection/projection device. When the sunlight strikes raindrops the water drops (acting like a glass prism) detect and project a rainbow in the sky. The detection/projection device called the human eye then sees the refracted light projected as a rainbow.

The same detection/projection process is true on the subnuclear level: The ocean of strings or quarks could not exist to compose protons and neutrons were it not for the force messengers that physicists call W-plus, W-minus and Z-zero. None of these tinker-toy combinations would work without the electrons and neutrinos. With quarks the detection/projection device analogy goes like this: these subatomic quanta can be thought of as devices which detect the virtual energy which exists in the Planck realm and continuously projects this energy blueprint into the forms of matter out of which we are all composed -- the earth we stand on and the air we breath.

The human observer has devices like eyes and ears with which to detect/project some of the spectrum of energy waves, both visual and aural. Physicists have invented modern devices which detect more detail of the energy and matter by magnifying it with satellite telescopes, radio telescopes, electron microscopes and energy accelerators. Although magnifying a thing doesn't bring it into existence, looking at matter through a magnifying device does allow the scientist to reveal some of the hidden detail. However the picture which is revealed can never be separated from the device used to detect/project the object into view. The picture and the picturing device are also an inseparable team.

To sum up the worldreels cosmology: in the hidden realm, call it the Planck realm, the energy required to design and maintain the visible realm exists. In this Planck realm lies the hidden blueprint recorded on the Planck film by the unceasing arrival of neutrinos from the sun. Just as chromosomes and genes are the hidden blueprint for the formation and growth of the plant and animal cells, so exists a forever hidden blueprint which directs the formation of worldreels which are projections of the blueprint into the visible world. In the forever hidden Planck realm these virtual energies jitter through the Planck lens which projects these micro images into the visible world -- magnifying them so that physicists can find their zoo of particles out of which the material universe is composed. It is these energy-particles: leptons, mesons and baryons along with the messenger forces -- photons, gluons, bosons and grivitons that bring into focus the final shape of our material world. This discussion of the worldreels cosmology is needed if the reader, who hears of the fantastic exploits of the novels main character, Keeber, is to suspend his/her disbelief.

As you might interpret the paragraphs above, nothing answers any questions regarding the intentionality or design of the universe or planet earth. Worldreels, as a cosmology, is merely a point of view developed for the benefit of my cast of characters in the new novel, INSIDE THE RAINBOW. Since nothing in the Planck realm will ever be experimentally verified, the reader is encouraged to remain the skeptic. I could have referred to a hundred other cosmologies or listed a hundred books here in a bibliography (as hundreds of writers have done and which would only bore you) in a futile hope of establishing some real world authority to these ideas. If you care to read books on cosmology which I have read and written reviews of, here is the link below.
