Earthquakes around the world
The Idea :
On January 26, 2001, Gujarat region in India experienced a major earthquake of magnitude 7 in widespread areas beyond the epicenter.
The earthquake and the aftershocks destroyed hundreds of villages. Ahmedabad city, far away from the epicenter saw human misery due to devastaion  of many tall buildings.

Will earthquake occur again? If a big shake comes, when? These questions were in every one's mind. I was intrigued and confused by lack of human knowledge and prevailing rumers. Internet came to my rescue.
I surfed through the net to learn the mechanisms and history of all quakes. Earthquakes are studied by many instituitions across the world. The most prominent and systematic being the
USGS.

Every day few thousands of earthquakes are taking place in distant places around our planet. But all are not strong enough to disturb life or nature. Only few are. USGS has been  monitoring quakes in far and wide places even beyond civilised human inhabitation. I have been receiving their quake data from February 2001 regularly. I wish to share this knowledge with surfers like you.

As I am grateful to USGS for their effort to send me their observation data on this major natural event, I hope to recover some meaning out of numbers and dates as the website grows.
Thank you for visiting.

On January 26, 2001...
I was enjoying the sunny winter morning, sitting on a garden chair on my penthouse terrace, 5 storeys up. My wife was  preparing breakfast downstairs. As I was alone, I thought my body was twisting or my chair is shaking a bit, when the first tremor came for 2/3 seconds. After 30 seconds or so, the big shake came with all its ferocity. The birds started flying in  panic, people ran in chaos, too much of sound came from unknown sources. I saw the door, windows and iron grills rattling and shaking, about to crumble down. My wife ran up to me and dragged me through the doors and the steps leading down to ground floor. The deafening sound was still in the air. It took 5 minutes for the big quake to stop. But for few months, many aftershocks came with much less intensity.

Man can not stop the natural events like earthquakes, but can definitely attempt to mitigate the destructions, sufferings and loss of life. As science and religious values are progressing, the hope to minimise and face the miseries lead us to think, analyse and predict the events in some way. So far we could not predict any earthquake, but we dont give up so soon.....
