| Can you predict earthquakes ? Earthquakes cannot be predicted. One can only make a very rough estimate of how frequent can an earthquake occur in a region. Foe example : one can expect more earthquakes in a region close to Japan, Indonesia rather than England. Certain regions are earthquake prone and there is a probability of more quakes in those regions. No one has ever discovered if there is any time interval for an earthquake to occur. However based on geographical location, physical features and past history scientists can calculate the probability of an occurance during a certain time span. Can animals predict earthquakes ? It has been observed that animals behave unusually just prior to an earthquake. However no one has discovered if there is any specific relation between unusual behaviour and an occurrance of a quake. Some tales say that since animals are in direct contact with the earth they can sense certain vibrations and movements which humans cannot. However this theory could be true to a large extent. Birds have been observed to chirp vigorously and fly madly few minutes before the earth shakes. Why are we having so many earth quakes ? It is not true that earth quakes have increased over the years. Earthquakes have only increased awareness worldwide, specially in the regions that are more quake prone. Due to the increasing number of safety measures taken to minimise the destruction caused to life and property. Places like California, Japan, Indonesia have set up adequate seismographic stations and other measures. Moreover other developments in the form of precautionary measures to minimise the destruction have been introduced over the years. Scientific detection and publicity have made people more aware of this natural calamity. Are there more earthquakes in the morning/evening ? Earthquakes can occur at any time of the day. There is no scientific data that supports the claim that earthquakes are more frequent in the morning/evening. Forces that are responsible for the occurrance of an earthquake cannot be influenced by time, climate or season. Any given hour of the day is eqally probable for an earthquake to occur. Is there an earthquake weather ? There is no theory that has established a relation between weather and earthquakes. However a certain theory stated that because a large amount of air was trapped underground, the weather would be hot and calm before an earthquake. Some people believe that earthquakes occur in calm, cloudy conditions. Such weather was usually preceded by winds, meteors and thunderstorm. Earthquakes are generated miles underground and the forces that cause earthquakes are much larger than the weather forces. Can the position of the moon or the planets affect seismicity? So far no significant relation has been confirmed between the rate of earthquake occurrance and seismicity. The moon, sun, and other planets have marked influence on earth in the form of gravitational force. This influence is proportional to the objects mass, and inversely proportional to the square of its distance from the earth. Thus all astrological predictions on earthquake occurrance have so far failed. |
