| Primary preparation for earthquake. How to be prepared for an immediate occurrence of a major earthquake? There are many websites including USGS, where elaborate lists of measures are given to face earthquakes. But the problem is, panic is created during the situation, everyone forgets all of the measures and behave in utterly chaotic manner. Rumors and false confidence lead to irrational human behavior. However we list here few important safety measures. 1. Make 2 sets of duplicate copies of all important documents relating to insurance, housing, education, passport and bank account. One set of duplicate documents should be kept in bank. The other set should be kept in your car. Original set of document should be locked in iron safe in the house. Scan all the papers and keep the scanned images in your email folders. 2. Along with the documents keep inside your car a first aid box, a matchbox, a flashlight, one set of clothes and few essential items required to spend one night in the open. 3. In case an earthquake is felt, put off electricity and gas. Leave the house immediately climbing down the stairs. Run for your car or open space nearby. Avoid tall buildings in the vicinity. There will be few large aftershocks following a major devastating earthquake. Stay in the open for one full day. Look for a relief camp nearby. Do not panic. Do not listen to unconfirmed rumors. Primary earthquake preparedness can save your life. You may not be lucky to save your property. All preparations will be futile, if your neighbouring buildings catch fire or shake violently to destroy your building. On May 31, 1970 a landslide caused by the 1970 Yungay, Peru earthquake killed 20,000 people. Only 400 people could survive, most of whom were in the cemetery and stadium at the time of the earthquake. Secondary preparation for earthquake concerns the people who survive an earthquake. |
