Danielle's "Princess" Gown

Costume Description
From http://www.cosprop.co.uk, concept sketches for the costumes of Ever After, including Danielle's Princess Gown. Shows a painting that was possibly used as inspiration as well as fabric and trim swatches (picture #1). Cool!

Deep maroon velvet gown with red-gold brocade overdress. Floor length, slightly trained. Underdress probably one piece with movie ‘cheats.’ Empire waist. 'V'-shaped insert of white silk (?). There is no lacing as would be expected. Semi-sheer ‘chemise’ shows at square-scoop neckline - it seems to be edged with maroon thread and slightly gathered into place. White undersleeves of same material with slight crinkle to it (see picture #13). Tight velvet oversleeves are decorated with gold metallic thread in a diamond pattern. Oversleeves split at sides and are decorated every-so-often down the length of the sleeve with gold buttons tied with maroon cording (picture #11-13). Matching cording attaches the sleeves at the armscye.

Red brocade overdress features wide straps and deep V neckline, edged in gold cording. Decorated at waist with gold scrollwork-like trim and a large rhinestone brooch (?) center front (picture #3). Slightly full skirt, empire waist. Worn with jeweled gold crown (white and pink pearls - see picture #5-7), and long ruby and gold necklace (NOT Queen Marie's necklace seen here). The necklace is attached to the shoulders of the velvet gown, as the chain does not wrap around Danielle's neck in back.

Historical Reference
Thanks to the cosprop.co.uk concept sketches, we know for certain that the vast majority of the costumes in Ever After were inspired by historical paintings, e.g., Danielle's Princess Gown, Danielle's Blue Library Gown, Jacqueline's Green Brocade Gown. We've been able to identify many of the paintings seen in these concept sketches (compare paintings below to picture #1 above).

Visitation by Domenico Ghirlandaio, 1486-1490 (and detail)

Maggie noticed the fresco pictured in the cosprop.co.uk concept sketch is similar to another painting by the same artist. Perhaps the portrait was used as a study for the larger fresco?

Portrait of Giovanna Tornabuoni by Domenico Ghirlandaio, 1488
