Tailored to your interest

A stamp collection can grow according to your interests and the degree to which you want to specialize. One of this hobby’s most enjoyable aspects is the personal touch that everyone can give his or her own collection. For example, many people choose topical collecting. This means that they collect stamps that complement another important interest in their lives, be it sports, flowers, animals, music, theaters, or just about any activity you could imagine. This way you not only have the enjoyment of collecting stamps from around the world but also become more and more knowledgeable about your favourite subject. Others prefer to collect stamps by country. Most collectors begin by collecting the stamps of their own country, as these are most readily obtainable in both mint and used condition. Many then branch out by collecting the stamps by the country of their ancestral origin, or some faraway land that holds an exotic fascination for them.

How to begin?

Stamp collecting is the easiest hobby to begin. The first stamps for your collection may have arrived in today’s mail in the form of used or cancelled ones. Or simply by visiting your local post office you can buy some unused or mint stamps...not for postage, but for collecting! The place where you live may or may not have a store devoted exclusively to stamp collectors; however, there will usually be a department store nearby that is almost certain to contain an area devoted to stamps. One bit of advice: before making that first purchase, try to decide what you want to collect - your own country only, all countries, topical, used, or unused. It may take some time to reach a permanent decision, but as most collectors will tell you, those first stamps you acquire will hold a special place in your collection.
