LIST OF THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL COURSES CONDUCTED BY DR. (UKR.) ANDRIY D’YAKOV

Theoretical courses (lectures)

1. Lexicology of the English Language

This course is an introduction to the structure of the English vocabulary. Its chief purpose is to acquaint the students with the peculiarities of the English vocabulary, its development and stratification. The course will introduce the students into such problems as the connection of lexicology with other branches of linguistics (phonetics, morphology, syntax, stylistics), as well as the properties of word as a linguistic unit, the etymological structure of the modern English vocabulary, problems bound with the lexical and grammatical meaning, motivation of words, types of word structure etc. A special attention is given to the sociolinguistic aspect of LSP and branch terminology as a special stock of the English vocabulary. Some problems of the lexicography and terminography are also touched.

2. Theory of Language planning

The course introduces into language planning as a specific phenomenon of sociolinguistics, especially it concerns language corpus and language status planning. It touches upon the following questions:

Corpus planning is analyzed as a deliberate linguistic interference. A special attention is paid to terminological planning (terminological modernization and standardization).

Theoretical courses (seminars)

1. History of the English language

The course touches the problems of development of the English language and the state of the English phonetics, grammar as well as vocabulary in different historical periods. This analysis of development is illustrated with written specimens from Old English (Cura Pastoralis, Beowulf) and Middle English (Canterbury of Tales, Ormulum). The program of the seminar consists in the detailed analysis of the texts mentioned above as well as some theoretical questions.

2. Methods of Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language

The seminars in Methods of Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language consists in the analysis of traditional (direct method, grammar translation method, audiolingual method, audiovisual method etc.) and modern language instruction technologies as well as in the role play with the application of the specific features of the methods mentioned above.

Practical Courses at the Department of English

1. Practical Translation

Practical tasks in written literary translation (from English into Ukrainian) of various newspaper articles.

2. Writing Practice

Practical tasks touching upon different kinds of written English (narration, description, exposition, persuasion etc.) as well as business correspondence in English.

3. Analytical Text Interpretation

Detailed grammatical, lexical and stylistic analysis of different extracts of fiction in English.

1. English for special purpose for students from different fields (law science, philosophy, theology, physics, mathematics etc.)

2. English for special purpose for postgraduates.
