Delta Xi Phi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. was founded on April
20, 1994, on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) campus
by 15 strong and determined young women. Longing for diversity at
UIUC, these women wanted to establish a sisterhood that embraced
all ethnic backgrounds, religious beliefs, sexual preferences and
financial backgrounds. In the spring of 1992, two different groups
of women who were seeking to establish a sorority at UIUC learned
of each other's intentions. The two groups merged and were known
as Women for the Advancement of a Multicultural Society (WAMS).
WAMS contacted several sororities on other college campus about
establishing a chapter at UIUC. However, none of the sororities
possessed what WAMS desired. On April 20, 1993, WAMS decided to
stop looking at other sororities and start one of their own. The
women of WAMS went though a year long pledge process in which a
strong bond of sisterhood and friendship was formed. One year later,
WAMS became the founding mothers of the Alpha Chapter of Delta Xi
Phi Multicultural Sorority.
