| HISTORY OF THE DARBY TOWNSHIP PUBLIC LIBRARY Once upon a time, there was a police station on the corner of Hook Road and Clifton Avenues in Darby Township, Pa. Once the officers outgrew the small white building, township officials decided to build a bigger, better police station. This made the little white building very sad--it was all alone with nothing to do. It became dilapidated, warn and dull. It desperately needed an uplift. In about February of 2004, the building was rescued from its deteriorating state by meeting and becoming friendly with some neighbors in Darby Township. The little white building got a facelift and was renovated. The old police station cells were filled with all kinds of books for people who love to read. The little white building started feeling good about itself again. It had a reason to live, now as a library. The building couldn't stop making new friends, including greats like Elizabeth Adler, author of The Property of a Lady, and Alex Haley, author of Roots. These friends and many others stopped by and decided to stay. Volunteers began to drop by in anticipation of the vision that the little old white building foresaw. The building officially reopened its doors in June of 2005 as Darby Township Public Library. As the young and vibrant Darby Township Public Library, the little white building is eager to make new friends. Please join us in celebrating the birth of a new era here in Darty Township.
