Step 1: Before assessing your caloric needs determine whether you are of normal weight or not. This can be done by assessing your weight against your height from these tables (Men or Women). You will need to find your body frame to place yourself in one of the three groups given on the tables. A quick way of determining your ideal average weight is use the calculator given here. You can also assess your body status by calculating your Waist-Hip ratio or Waist-to-Height ratio. One of the more commonly methods used method is determining your BMI (Body mass index).

Step 2: Once you have determined that your weight you will know whether you want to maintain, gain or lose weight. The method for losing weight is to decrease input (diet) and increase output (exercise). The calories needed to maintain weight can be determined by calculating the calories you require. A simple method is to use the table given here, which will give you a rough guide to your calories. The caloric calculator has two modes. One of them will require you to give your lean mass which can be calculated from weight and height or can be determined from calculating body fat percentage and then subtracting it from total weight.

Step 3: Whatever your caloric needs you will have to use the tables given here to determine the caloric intake of the foods you are eating. One other place is the database given here, which gives details of any sort of food you eat.
