BIOGRAPHY

I am a self-taught artist who inherited my talents from J Loh (no, not the sultry Latina songstress, but my dad, John Loh). He was the pioneer of the Mozzie Coil Pots (click to see a selection of his fine work from England, Malaysia and Australia) which numerous others have copied, but that is another story.

I was born in Malaysia in 1976 - the year of the Dragon. Growing up in Malaysia was fun. However, as I grew older, the prejudices among the racial classes grew evermore apparent. My parents decided to make the upheaval move to Perth, Western Australia in search of better opportunities for their three sons. Although it was sweat, toil and tears at first, it has all paid off. All the three boys graduated from University and are doing great. Well, I did sneak off to Singapore to work right after graduation, but I blame it on the travel bug that bit me (please click here to see the places that I have travelled to).

In fact, after my final exams, my younger brother (Rich - he's a Fish Vet - yes, a fish vet) and I went on a budget backpacking 2-month tour around Western Europe - in the middle of winter! We embarked on the journey armed with our backpacks, a 60-day Eurolines pass and the Lonely Planet bible in hand. This was the real thing. None of that Contiki stuff. We arrived in new cities haggard after a long night travelling, searched for youth hostels (dorm style - sometimes 12 to a teenie room) in the wee hours of dawn, and were told we could only check into the rooms after they cleaned them out after lunch. We slept at train stations, stayed up all night at a night club, caught night transportation, all to save on accomodation. We survived on baguettes and water. Yeah, it was hedonistic!

Yes, it's real snow - Lewis Morris County Park, New Jersey (USA)

After the experience of a lifetime, I headed back to Perth for my convocation. I made a stopover in Singapore for a few weeks. Then I thought, "Why not try looking for a job since I'm here?" That I did and landed myself an Engineering job with a local firm. They were the main contractors in an $80+ million project building a semi-expressway bridge. Great experience, but working 6-7 days/week, often till after midnight was killing my social life. After just over a year, an opportunity arose where the world's largest shipping company, Maersk Sealand was offering a management trainee programme. It offered opportunities to travel. As I had not yet recovered from the travel bug bite, I jumped at it. I worked with them for 4 years, with a year stint in New Jersey, USA. Many memorable experiences and friendships were formed.

Oh, did I mention that I got married too? Should be somewhere in the middle of the above paragraph. Twist of fate. My decision to work in Singapore led me to many life-changing events.

Well, I'm now back in sleepy Perth. Having gained perspectives on many places around the globe, this is where we would now like to settle down. With this kind of laidback lifestyle, heck, I can get back to my hobbies again. So, give me a buzz for some "art-to-art" talk.
