	The regions near the North Pole are cold, bleak, and this environment makes life difficult and harsh for those who have choosen to live there. The people that are considered part of this group are Inuit of North America, Greenland, northern Russia (Siberians) and Scandinadia. Farming was impossible in this region and these people depended upon hunting and fishing for their food source. Thus, both animals and weather play a vital role in their mythology.

	In Inuit mythology, no supreme god exists, but instead several spirits who controlled the forces of nature exist. The most important of these are: Sedna, the sea spirit, Sila, the air spirit, and Tarqeq, the moon spirit. They believed that the world of spirits had power over every aspect of their daily lives. Each community had those who were called Shamans, who had the ability to speak directly with the spirits. These shamans guided the people, and would ask the spirits to assist them in hunting, fishing and to heal the sick or wounded. The Inuit and Siberian people shared a traditional belief that several worlds existed, stacked on top of each other. The Earth is in the middle, and good spirits existed in the upper worlds, and evil spirits lived in the lower worlds. A mythical tree was the path between the worlds, and it was during a trance that a shaman was able to speak to the spirits. Siberian mythology reflects a special relationship with animals. As in the Inuit mythology, Siberians tradionally believe that animals have a soul and that the hunted is just as important as the hunter. Animals were believed to have willingly giving their lives to hunter and thus they should be honored and respected. The brown bear is particularly powerful, and he is called the "Lord of the Forest", and can be a dangerous force. Yet, at the same time, he is a powerful force when healing injuries for a wound may be assisted in healing by using the bear's fat. Some Siberians people that they orginially came from a half-bear and half human ancestor. In the prehistoric past, mammoth was a very important to the Siberians. The mammoth provided them with meat to eat, bones to make tools, and skins to make clothes out of. Although the creature is extinct today, it is said that they helped to make the land with its great tusks and now rules as the master of the underworld.
