| The Japanese Akita is a loyal and courageous dog. Standing up to 71cm (28in) he is a very powerfully built dog. Ownership in the past was restricted to royalty, who used the dog to hunt wild boar, dear and the Japanese black bear. Originally bred for fighting, modern dogs are now used in police and army work. He attracts people with his thick, plush coat, and brilliant colour schemes, ranging from white through brindle and pinto to grey.
