An aviary or any enclosure that houses pets outside will attract rodents and other pests.

Hygiene is the first thing that must be considered with a birds aviary.

One of the simplest and most effective ways of creating a clean and vermin proof area is to elevate the birds aviary from the ground.

Elevating the aviary to prevent contact with the ground eliminates nesting areas for rodents and other unwanted pests.

It will also increase the life of the structure by preventing damp from penetrating.

Elevating pads that are molded from heavy duty polyvinyl thermoplastic are now available that will give excellent protection for your pets and aviary structure.

The elevating pads will easily support the average bird house aviary.

The bird aviary pads will not rot and are an attractive addition to the aviary.

Any electrical appliance that is used within the birds aviary should have insulated elevating pads installed to reduce the chance of an electrical fault shorting to ground.

The elevating pads will provide an extra layer of protection for the birds and owner should a electrical short occur.

They are not to be used as a substitute for proper circuit breakers and other safety switches for any electrical appliance used.

Rodent and insect control is increased with the use of baits that can be placed within the elevating pads. The bait will be kept dry and secluded inside the elevating pads casing.

A small access hole that rodents and other unwanted pests can obtain the bait is built into the pads.

The price of four elevating pads for a birds aviary is only $10

Free how to build a aviary plans

To build the aviary follow the measurements that have been used for the base of the aviaries plan. If a modification has been made to the free bird aviary plan the altered dimensions must be carried through to the completion of building the aviary.
A1/A2 Equal measurements to each other but larger than A5/A6 by approximately 20%
A3/A4 Equal measurements to each other but larger than A7/A8 by approximately 40%
A5/A6 The same measurements, both measurements are equal.
A7/A8 The same measurements, both measurements are equal.

Building a aviary

The base of the birds aviary is the first piece of plywood for aviaries that is cut to size.
A heater can be fitted to an aviary to give your birds a comfortable bird house. Heaters that are used by the pet market can be found at small heaters. The heaters can be built into the aviary.
The measurements for the aviary base will be guided by the amount of birds the aviary is required to house.

Free aviary plans

B1 This measurement will be the height of the aviary keeper plus 20%
B2 This measurement will be the height of B1 plus 20%
B3 Next draw a line connecting the edges of B1 and B2 after putting in the B4 measurement.
B4 Equal measurements to the A7/A8 edges
B1/B5 .. B2/B6 .. B3/B8 .. B4/B7 Equal measurements to each side of the bird aviary.

Bird aviary

Cut out the first side of the free plan for a bird aviary.
The sides of the aviary panels can be marked with its corresponding number. This will reduce any errors when assembling the aviary.

B1/B2/B3/B4 are the measurements of the first aviary side. To build the bird aviary templates are used wherever possible to reduce the chance of error.
Use the first side of the bird aviary as a template to make the
second side B5/B6/B7/B8.
The grain of the plywood panels must all face the same way and outwards. This will result in a quality finish to the aviaries exterior.

C1/C2 are equal measurements to A5 PLUS twice the thickness of the plywood being
used for the sides of the aviary.
C3/C4 are equal measurements to B1/B5, all the measurements are the same.
C5/C6 are equal measurements to A5 plus twice the thickness of the plywood being used for the sides of the aviary.
C7/C8 are equal measurements to B2/B6, all the measurements are the same.

Bird aviary plan

Materials used in the bird aviary plan for the aviary panels and aviary framing
Exterior grade plywood: Select a plywood for the birds house that has not been
treated with any chemicals that may be toxic for your pets. If the plywood has been treated with any chemical it may be absorbed by your bird and possibly make it ill.

Insulating material that has been treated with a pesticide should not be used for the construction of the free aviaries plans.

Build a bird aviary

Timber framing: Select timber for the aviary framing that is approximately two inches ( 50 millimeters ) x three inches ( 75 millimeters ) but will vary according to local conditions.
The size of timber selected for the framing of the aviary can vary to a large degree.

Exposure to high winds or inclement weather, the amount of birds and height of the aviary and the number of times that entry and exit to the aviary is required are a few of the things that will determine the final selection of framing timber size.

The amount of timber framing for the birds home that will be required is enough to line the inside of the base edges, sides and the top four edges of the aviary roof.
If a long or wide aviary has been selected for construction extra framing timber will be required for support posts and noggins.

Galvanized nails and screws: Use only galvanized nails and screws or hardware that has been protected from rust
Wood glue:A contact adhesive that is water proof can be used in the construction of the aviary and aviaries framing.
Exterior grade paint: Do not use any paint that contains lead in it. If a bird chews on the aviary timber there is a possibility that it may ingest some of the paint.
Sand paper: A coarse sandpaper can be used for the first sanding and a medium grade sandpaper should be used to finish of all joints on the aviary. Ensure that there are no rough edges on the birds aviary that may damage the birds feathers.

Build a birds aviary
The base is the first ply wood panel cut to dimension.
The interior of the base is then lined with timber framing.

Place the timber runners required to keep the base of the ground in their correct positions.

Screw, glue and nail the sides to the aviary base keeping the plywood side flush with the base panel under side.

Position and fit the upright corner pieces of the timber framing to the side edges of the aviary. If the aviary is wide or long, the center supporting framing and noggins will need to be fixed at this stage of the aviary construction.

Position and fit the back of the aviary next. Ensure that the back plywood sits flush to
the outside of the plywood sides and flush to the base underside.
The back aviary panel will strengthen the whole aviary construction.
Check al measurements and make suitable alterations if the structure is flimsy.

Fit the front of aviary keeping the edges flush with the sides and base underside.

Now place the roof of the aviary in position and space any over hang evenly.

To fit a window or windows to the aviary use a piece of cardboard for a template that
is the approximate size of the window required.

Draw the shape of the window onto the cardboard and cut along the drawn
lines.

Hold the cut out shape against the aviary wall in the position that you
require the window.

With a pencil draw the shape onto the selected wall area and then cut out
the shape. If the window is large and there is movement in the wall, make
a timber frame for the window.
Pin the timber framing to the aviaries wall to strengthen it.

The door or entry hatch for the birds aviary can be fitted in the same way as the window. Position the windows or door frame between the internal birds aviary framing.

If galvanized or zinc mesh wire is to be used as a front or window of the birds house, select mesh wiring that has been electroplated with a galvanized or zinc protective coating. The majority of mesh wiring on the market has been dipped into a galvanizing bath. Birds can get zinc or lead poisoning from wire mesh if the bird attacks it.

To insulate the birds aviary a tar paper can be used to line the interior of the aviary. Insulation batts can also be used for the aviaries insulation but they must be cut to fit in between the aviary framing. Both forms of insulating material will need a liner to prevent the aviaries insulation from attacks by your birds. When you are happy with the structural strength of the aviaries, sand back any rough areas,
and paint the aviary.

DISCLAIMER

To build a aviary or aviaries the materials you use will be the deciding factor on the useful life of the bird house.
The use of any material that has been coated or treated with any chemicals that may be toxic to your bird should be avoided.
The birds cannot be constantly supervised and it is not unusual for them to chew on their aviary, bird box, bird house, or aviaries.

Any bird home you build should not have the enclosures floor resting on the ground. This will only create mildew and make the birds house cold and damp. Rodent control will also be difficult.

Face the opening of the aviary away from any prevailing winds.

When using any tools be sure that the proper safety equipment and safety procedures are used at all times.

Read and understand all instruction books that are supplied with any tools and always maintain a clean and safe working area.

Never work around children or unrestrained pets or let them in the work area unsupervised.
