Conrad made out a will with his 2nd wife in Leer, Germany. Dennis Nicklaus had the will translated in May 1994. (It had been in some papers of Peter B. Nicklaus' which Gerard Nicklaus had held onto after Peter B's death, but probably no one remembered what it was for 40 years, as it was in german script.) His will says he is a carpenter/furniture maker (Tischler in german). Other family stories have described him as a cabinet maker.

His firstname appears to be spelled Cunrad in one copy of the will. D. Nicklaus has two different copies of the will. Apparently one was made and sent to Anna upon the death of her father, and then the 2nd copy was made and sent upon the death of her stepmother. But the two copies say basically the same things. Since the will made with Gesina Elsen is dated 1875, they must have been married by then.
