About 1894 or 1895, John came to the US. According to their niece, Edith (Buschow) Luther John and his brother Andrew left Bohemia in the night to escape the military draft of the Kaiser (emperor of Austria-Hungary, which controlled Bohemia at the time). They eventually made their way to Watonwan County, Minnesota where their grandfather and other relatives were. The dates are provided by the 1900 and 1920 censuses which say John came to the US in 1894 or 1895, respectively, and became a naturalized citizen in 1902.

According to Ludwig A. Heger, John played trombone in the US army band. He was in the army in San Francisco during the big earthquake. Edith (Buschow) Luther said that John was one of the first to build a motorcycle (in the Watonwan county area, I guess).

His tombstone reads, ``John P. Blaha Pvt. Infantry b: Dec 29, 1878. d: Feb. 28, 1950''
