FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

1) Who is EthnoAncestry?   We are an innovative new company dedicated to discovering new Y chromosome SNPs and STRs and developing new tests to help you in your deep ancestry research. See About US for details.

2) What tests do you offer?   We offer an 18-marker STR test and three types of SNP tests: Haploview, Deep Ancestry. See our Products page for information.

3) Can you give me some technical details on your Haploview test?   The Haploview test uses a multiplex of DNA probes that can detect up to 96 SNPs in a single test. The test gives a quick overview of one's haplogroup. See our Haploview Test page for a list of SNPs in the Haploview test and their corresponding haplogroups.

4) Can you give me some technical details on your Deep Haplogroup test?   The Deep Haplogroup tests use direct sequencing of known SNP locations to determine the presence of SNPs. We use a "tree approach" to Deep Haplogroup testing of some haplogroups -- the detection of an ancestral SNP determines the choice of descendant SNPs to be tested. See our Deep Haplogroup page for a list of SNPs and and their corresponding haplogroups.

5) Can you give me some technical details on your Custom SNP test?   The Custom SNP test also uses direct sequencing of known SNP locations to determine the presence of SNPs. However, we limit the search to just those SNPs that you specify. See our Custom SNP page for a list of SNPs and and their corresponding haplogroups.

6) Why is there a one-time DNA Extraction Fee?   DNA extraction fees are the norm at most DNA labs. Some DNA testing companies hide the extraction fee in general pricing. EthnoAncestry separates this cost out. Once your DNA has been extracted, then it can be used again for new Deep Haplogroup, Custom, or STR tests.

7) What is the turnaround time on your tests?   Our Haploview test typically has a three-week turnaround time from receipt of your DNA sample. Our Deep Haplogroup, Custom SNP, and STR tests take longer. Times will vary depending on the test ordered and the backlog at our lab. Six-week turnaround times are the norm.

8) What does my DNA test report look like?   We are currently revising our test report format, but our SNP reports include the SNPs for which you test positive and your corresponding haplogroup and subgroup. Our STR reports include the markers and their corresponding values.

9) Do you provide results interpretation?   Testing companies do not generally provide results interpretation, and we limit interpretation to the content of our website. If you need further help in interpretation we suggest you post your results to one of the DNA message boards and invite comments from the genetic genealogy community.

10) Can my results be used to determine medical conditions?   EthnoAncestry does not test any DNA marker locations that are associated with any known medical condition.

11) What is your privacy policy?   Your personal information and results will be kept completely confidential, and never shared with outside parties. We may be adding a page to our website where results may be posted -- but only with the express authorization of our customers.
