In
January of this year (2000), a young Berkeley grad and his even younger brother
came up with the idea to open up a Trance/Techno dance club in the southern
area of Berkeley, right near the border of Oakland. Club ARC opened late
that month, not exactly located in the BEST part of the town, but in no time,
ARC had became a household name with the local techno lovers and clubbers. Fliers
and handouts could be found all over Berkeley and the surrounding communities
in cafes, bars, and record stores. James Hu had successfully run the business,
selling out to a packed house almost every weekend headlining DJ's such as DYLOOT,
SAHID, Tom Slik, Norman Freeman and Lars Speedrock from Germany, even the local
legend MARS(of Mars and Mystre), as well as ARC's amazing resident DJs...
At the end of March (2000), James and Joe decided to take
ARC to the next level and attempt to form a corporate identity. Funk
Theory Productions (or FTP for short) was founded and with a bit of reluctance
Club ARC was now called Club FTP. For 4 more months the Hus and their
incredible staff continued their mission to be the first, the only, and the
best Trance venue in Northern California, keeping the Trance movement alive
by supplying all the newest music even before it hit the radio waves. Sadly
though, with the renovations planned for Oakland by the mayor and the city council,
Club FTP was short lived. Building contracts and permits expired, and
with no possibility of renewal, FTP closed it's doors on June 30th.
James, not being the one to give up, attempted to keep the
FTP name out in the public by creating a new venue in the form of a cafe. The
area's first "Techno Cafe" Opened June 30th as a follow up to the
closing of the club. Here patrons could buy a wide variety of food stuffs
and beverages while listening to the latest in Electronic music. Open
sessions were to be bi-hourly, so the average Joe could come up and test his
mettle on the turntables or spin with the in-house djs as a sort of quasi-school
of mixing. In my eyes, this was the BEST idea I've heard from James.
The possibilities were endless, especially since an establishment such as this
would be the perfect grounds for the classroom weary student to let loose in,
after all the hours and hours of note taking and lab time. This,
however, was not to be the case. Located in the middle of San Francisco's
"Chinatown" above a well known restaurant, the cafe was destined not
"to be". Various complications forced James to alter his plans
and "Techno Cafe" ended up being a small (very small) night club.
Weeklies, as it was affectionately called, died shortly after September
rolled around. This was to be the final breaking point in FTP's business
agenda. All of the in-house djs are still hard at work representing FTP
to the fullest by headlining rave parties, socials as well as various underground
functions... So when you hear of rising young music stars of the Bay Area, you'll
know where they most likely came from.
I've
had the pleasure of working with all of the ARC/FTP staff and djs, working on
flyers and other propaganda, as well as renovations to the club itself, from
the day the doors first opened on January 21 to the struggling end in mid September.
Good things surely await them as time draws near for the doors to reopen
on the latest perversion of Club FTP, as they are planning for the next year. Hopefully
good fortune will stick with them on their next endeavor
UPDATE:

Funk Theory Productions has reincarnated Club ARC. It is now located in San
