"Back in '83 I was a DJ, DJ" Peanut Butter Wolf

Here is a detailed description of everyone who Bran Van 3000 chose to credit with having an influence in creating their album Glee.

And for the beat:

Shine Like Stars: Local lo-fi band. Released their Caramel EP Jan '99 on Zoobone. Scetchy past suggests that several BV3 members may have been members in this band at one point or another prior to June '97. I'm pretty sure that this band consists of former members from the Doughboys.

At Random: Local hip hop act on Zoobone. They coined the name Mont Real in '96 on their track Feel Mont Real.

Dubmatique: World renowned French R&B/Hip Hop group from Montreal. Lately, they've being touring with IAM.

R-Kade: (Ruling Kingdoms Against Demonic Entities) Local hip hopper on Zoobone. Released a 12" called Shattered Realms fall '98. Has been known to hang with Liquid and appear during BV3 encores. R-Kade's actual message that he left on James DiSalvio's answering machine appears on the track Une Chanson.

Gravediggaz: Wu-Tang Clan side project. Gravedigga rapper Poetic appears on the international version of Afrodiziak. He also made appearances during the two Montreal shows in Jan '98 and the L.A. show in Feb '98.

Mike D.: Beastie Boy. Tried to influence James Di Salvio into signing with Capitol at the MTV Music Awards Sept '97. BV3 also played his Free Tibet after-party in Washington July '98.

Bob Power: Produced Carry On (International release of Glee) and Sampler Happy (Afrodiziak b-side).

Rick Rubin: Famous producer. Def Jam founder (with Russel Simmons). He was responsible for making the Beastie Boys, Run DMC and LL Cool J. He was also present at Madonna's MTV Awards meeting. Other people at that meeting included Simmons, the Beastie Boys and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Shades: Shades of Culture are a local hip hop act. They released a full length CD entitled Mindstate Summer '98. SoC have made a couple appearances at BV3 shows including the two Montreal shows in Jan '98 and the Insomnia gig June '98.

Sophie and Natty Soya: Members from La Gamic. Appear on Ceci N'est Pas Une Chanson and the Dinking In L.A. (Dave One mix). James DiSalvio makes an appearance on their single and video Ca Fait Toujours Mal.

Dave One: Obscure Disorder's producer and A-Trak's older brother. He's a cool guy that runs the record store Science on St. Laurent and the hip hop label Audio Research. Other people who've worked at his store include R-Kade, A-Trak and some guy who I had an hour and a half conversation about Kool Keith with. Dave-One lended a hand in producing Glee's fat beats and remixed Drinking In L.A.

Rakim: One of the all-time greatest MCs. Used to be part of Eric B. & Rakim. Their influential cuts include Paid In Full and Move The Crowd.

Prince Paul: Old (but not too old) School DJ. He's worked closely with just about everybody who's anybody. The DJ is best known for his work with De La Soul. He's been keeping busy lately with his Deep Concentration series which features many talented turntablists and his new album/movie A Prince Among Theives.

The Massive Sound System: Bristol's The Wild Bunch were the most influencial hip hop collective from the UK. They dabbled in all four elements of hip hop. Members included 3D, Grant Marshall and Nellee Hooper. The only piece of work that is still relativly easy to find is their remix of Eric B. & Rakim's Move The Crowd.

The group reformed in 1990 under the new name Massive Attack and would go on to change music forever. They've released three perfect albums, the most recent being Mezzanine in April '98. Despite their reputation for being asses, I can assure you that 3D is one of the nicest people that I've ever met. Bran Van opened for them in Brussells on June 5, 1998.

Solaar: MC Solaar. World renowned rapper from Paris. Smooth beats and even smoother rhymes.

Pharcyde: West coast hip hop collective. They were influential back in the early 90s.

The Wu: The Wu-Tang Clan. The most influential hip hop group from the second half of this decade. Rza, the mastermind behind the project has worked on dozens of side projects to create the largest collective this planet has ever seen. Having said that, I still recomend 36 Chambers over any of their newer work. It seems the boys from Long Island are still in a rut.

Mr Mayfield: Curtis Mayfield is the man behind the Shaft soundtrack. He is considered one of the most influential and advanced musicians from this century. Q Bert has locked himself into his house in the Bay Area trying to emulate his musical patterns on the turntable.

Gil Scott: Gil Scott Herron is one of the members of the Last Poets. Lately he's been giving spoken word performances around the world including one last September at Concordia with members of the Disposible Heros of Hipocricy.

Dylan...: Bob Dylan?

Cypress: Cypress Hill are better known for their smoking habits than their music. Their album Black Sunday is still considered by many to be the classic party album. This album did a better job warming up the crowd at the I Mother Earth's show, in June '97 at the Cabaret in Montreal, than the live set by the Killjoys.

KRS: KRS-One used to be in the group BDP (Boogie Down Productions). Considered to be one of the best MCs of all time. He used to speak out like Chuck D. from Public Enemy. Now he just makes dodgy guest appearances on bad rock albums.

Flash: Grandmaster Flash is one of the original hip hop djs. The electrician is best known for remixing Chic's Good Times on The Adventures on The Wheels of Steel back in '79 on his modified Sears brand turntables.

Eric B.: Rakim's dj. See Rakim above.

Q Bert: World Champion S.F. dj and member of the Invisbl Skratch Piklz. Revolutionized the mix tape with his tape Demolition Pumpkin Squeeze Muzak.

Shortkut and Disk: Skratch Pikl members Shortcut has a cool live album where he battles Ozomatli and Jurrasic 5 dj Cut Chemist, called Live at the Future Primitive. Disk has been working with South Park theme song creaters Primus lately. It has recently come to my attention that Shortkut is now also a member of the Beat Junkies.

Yukata: Hip Hop dj from Japan.

Honda: Hip hop dj from Japan. I love his album from April '98 called HII. Honda, Yutaka and Alladin were ripped off by Bran Van when they were sampled on Drinking In L.A.

Mixmaster Mike: Replaced Hurricane as the Beastie Boys's dj and is a founding member of the Invisbl Skratch Piklz. He's considered one of the best turntablists not only from this decade but ever.

Beat Junkies: DJ collective. Members include Babu, Rhetmattic and J-Rocc. They'll be remixing Rawkus's forthcoming mix album Soundbombing 2.

Peanut Butter Wolf: Bay area hip hop dj.

Jeep Beat Collective: Yet another dj collective.

Z-Trip: Member of the Arizona collective The Bomb Shelter DJs. He's appeared on the Small Soldiers soundtrack and is also on the live disc enetitled Live at the Future Primitive vol. 2, which I must say is my favourite mix CD from '98.

Rob Swift: Original member of the X-Men (now X-Ecutioners). He made his name by remixing Biz Markie's Nobody Beats the Biz live during a DMC Championship in the early '90s.

Ghetto: Yet another dj.

Babu: Member of the Beat Junkies. See above.

Kool DJ E.Q.: Famous Old School DJ. He's been around since the times of Run DMC and Eric B. & Rakim.

Shadow: DJ Shadow is considered America's answer to trip hop. He hails from S.F. and has appeared on Dr. Octagon's album. He was first noticed in '93 because of track called Lost & Found (S.F.L.), which is based around a sample of U2's Sunday Bloody Sunday. Go out and buy his debut album from '96 Endtroducing right now.

Luc Raymond: Sona resident DJ.

Chris Provonost: Local techno-ish dj.

Tiga: Sona resident. Released a mix album fall '98 enitiled Montreal Mix Sessions and remixed Sinking In L.A.

Mateo and Delage: Local djs that spend most of their time spinning at raves. They both remixed Srinking In L.A. with Tiga.

Kid Koala: Bullfrog member who's on Ninja Tune. He's also worked with the Beastie Boys's keyboardist Money Mark.

Fink: Ninja Tune drum and bass dj.

Double A & Twist: Montreal drum & bass djs who've made it big in the U.K. They used to be residents at Angels and the Sona. Lately they've made a few appearances at Safari night at the Stereo and released a 12" called Midnight Run.

Ninja Tune: Ultra-hip underground record label started by the boys from Coldcut. The label is based out of London but their North American head office is located in Montreal.

A-Trak: Member of Obscure Disorder. 1997's World DMC champion. Dave One is his older brother. He's the dj at the start of the Drinking In L.A. video. A-Trak also performed with BV3 during their Creme '97 show at Jarry Park. Now he can be seen making a cameo in the Shades of Culture video Mindstate.
