Under the Covers With The Bran Clan No Bran Van 3000 show would be complete without a chaotic cover song from one of their many favourite bands. I have attempted to list every song that the band has ever covered and where you can find the original. Baba O'Riley, The Who (Who's Next) Includes the memorable chorus that goes "Teenage Wasteland!" If only we could get Nick Hynes to play his guitar using Townsend-esq windmill chops. Bran Van played this live between May '98 and July '98. Cum On Feel The Noize, Quiet Riot (Mental Health) A early 80s glam rock classic from Randy Rhodes's (Ozzy guitarist) old band. Two different versions can be found on the two releases of Glee. My favourite version is the one they played live until Spring '98. They haven't played it since. Enter Sandman, Metallica (Metallica) While the rest of the world was experiencing Nirvana and the grunge revolution in the early 90s, Montrealers grew their hair, wore tight leather and responded "AWE OUI, LE METALLICA!!!" when asked what their favourite band was. Wait a minute they still do that. Metallica is as Montreal as smoked meat and strip clubs. Bran Van played a heavy version of this song with EP on vocals during the December '98 tour. Gigantic, The Pixies (Surfer Rosa) My favourite song about having sex in a forest...even if it is from the girl's point of view and Paul is rather well hung (hence the title). Bran Van played this live during the December '98 Quebec tour during a medley with the song Chemical Climax. Jingle Bells, Bing Crosby During the Christmas '98 holiday season, Bran Van 3000 was kind enough to remix this carol for Gap Kids. The kalideascope commercial had me sitting in front of the tv watching Much Music for hours trying to tape it. I still don't have a copy. Too bad BV3 didn't play any Christmas carols during their December Quebec tour. Sunday Bloody Sunday, U2 (War) The first time I saw BV3 live, they played this song. They even introduced it with the, "There's been alot of talk about this next song," bit. My all-time favourite BV3 moment. I saw them do the routine once more, but unfortunatly they stopped doing it during the spring of '98. They usually played it as a medley with Old School, minus EP's death metal screaming. We can only pray they release a live album with this or even as a b-side somewhere in the near future. |
