"Back in '83 I was a DJ, DJ" Peanut Butter Wolf

Musique Plus once did an hour long special on sampling. In one segment they interviewed EP and James. They boasted that they only sampled really obscure things and that once they were finished mixing them, no one would recognise them. I took that as a challenge. I would like to present to you Sampler Happy, my list of samples that Bran Van have nicked from various places.

Sampler Happy

"We came here tonight to get started"
Gimme Sheldon (CA 1:08, US 1:07)
Source: The Bomb Drops, Jeep Beat Collective (0:01)
Notes: The X-Ecutioners (aka the X-Men; DJs Roc Raida, Rob Swift, Mista Sinesta and Total Eclispe) released a track in Jan 1998 called Get Started. The track opens with this sample, however, it isn't cut. The line goes, "We came here tonight to get started, to go act ill or get retarded." The original is actually from a track by Biz Markie.

Bo-Boomp
Gimme Sheldon (CA 0:23, US 0:23)
Source: The Bizness, De La Soul feat. Common (0:03)

Frampton Riff
Gimme Sheldon (CA 1:29, US Does Not Appear)
Source: Do You Feel Like We Do (Live), Peter Frampton (8:33)

"Back in '83 I was a DJ, DJ..."
Gimme Sheldon (CA 1:34, US 1:22)
Source: The Chronicles (I will always lover h.e.r.), Peanut Butter Wolf (0:01)

"Follow The Leader..."
Gimme Sheldon (CA 1:41, US DNA)
Source: I Know You Got Soul, Eric B. & Rakim (0:47)

"Marijuana...buying it, growing it, giving it as gifts and stealing it"
Gimmes Sheldon (CA 1:46, US DNA)
Source: Scratch Monopoly PT II, The Beat Junkies (4:26)

"Beat Junkies"
Gimme Sheldon (CA DNA, US 1:55)
Source: Scratch Monopoly PT II, The Beat Junkies (2:00)

"DJ"
Gimme Sheldon (CA 2:16, US DNA)
Source: Scratch Monopoly PT II, The Beat Junkies (2:08)

"Two Turntables"
Gimme Sheldon (CA 2:29, US DNA)
Source: Scratch Monopoly PT II, The Beat Junkies (3:26)

"Alright!"
Gimme Sheldon (CA 3:00, US DNA)
Source: Got To Choose (live), KISS (3:35)

"I got this feeling that tonight is gonna be a hot night!"
Gimme Sheldon (CA 3:11, US DNA)
Source: Hotter Than Hell (live), KISS (0:14)

"Baby"
Gimme Sheldon (CA 5:28, US DNA)
Source: Pissant, Smashing Pumpkins (1:48)
Notes: Listen closely because the sample is very faint.

Drum Beat
Couch Surfer (CA 0:00, US 0:00)
Source: Let Me Clear My Throat (Old School Reunion remix), DJ Kool (2:28)

"L.A."
Drinking In L.A. (CA 3:45, US 3:45)
Source: The Track, ASAP Productions (0:07)
Notes: ASAP consists of DJs Aladin, Honda and Yutaka. It amazes me that BV3 didn't clear this sample on the international release of this version. Too bad Honda didn't show-up at Insomnia like he was scheduled to. I guess the only explanation why the sample wasn't cleared is that Honda probably doesn't remember where he took the sample from.

Drinking In L.A. Riff
Drinking In L.A. (CA 0:01, US 0:01)
Source: Today, Smashing Pumpkins (0:01)
Notes: This sample is heavily manipulated so it has very difficult to source. The sample from Pissant is evidence that BV3 are atleast partialy interested in the Smashing Pumpkins. The notes for Today are:

    D#, G#, F, G#, D#, G#, G, D#, G#
           (1) (2) (3)

DiLA plays the F and it echos three more times. Next it plays the D# and it echos three times and finally, you guessed it, it plays that G# with it echoing three times.

"ah, 1-2, ah, 1-2-3-4"
Problems (CA 0:13, US DNA)
Source: (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais, The Clash (0:01)

"Microphone check, 1-2..."
Une Chanson (0:01)
Source: James DiSalvio's answering machine
Notes: This is a message that R-Kade left one afternoon when he was pissed-off at the whole world. He uses the line "The tears of a clown make the whole world laugh" in the chorus of a track that he wrote on New Years Day back in '98. The title of the yet to be released track is "The Tears of a Clown"

"Ji-Jingle Bells"
Gap Kids TV Commercial
Source: Jingle Bells, Bing Crosby (0:36)

"Oh, have alot of fun"
Gap Kids TV Commercial
Source: Jingle Bells, Bing Crosby (1:45)

"The Rhythm! The Rebel!"
Only played live during the Quebec December '98 tour
Source: Rebel Without a Pause, Public Enemy (0:12)

Crazy Synth
Baba O'Riley (live at Viva 0:01)
Source: Baba O'Riley, The Who (0:01)

"Do-do-do..."
Baba O'Riley (live at Viva 2:35)
Source: The Hustle, Van McCoy (0:35)
Notes: Despite the fact that this is the only evidence that BV3 have sampled The Hustle, I think it's fair to say that they played it like this most of the time.
