Why DIY
DIY offers a far great flexibility in tailoring
a system to your needs, costs, and performance needs.
The most common reason for the choice to take the DIY road is the cost
factor, the common example
is of a person going into a HIFI store and
not liking anything within their budget, but they can of course
afford
a DIY speaker project. Also building your own system allows you to
custom finish your speakers
to match your furniture and fit into your
room, or to fit into a specific sized space. It also allows you to
build speakers using techniques not available in the commercial scene.
Starting DIY
(Learn what you are really
getting yourself into)
Firstly if you are contemplating building your next speaker system,
due to the desire to save money.
Then consider this, your first
project will always be the most expensive, often more so than buying a
commercial version. Your first project will require you to buy several
hundred dollars worth of tools,
so unless you already have lots of
tools and machinery or have a friends workshop available to you
then
DIY is not better value.
Now we look at the next part of our investigation, further DIY
projects, now that we have our tools
we can make DIY projects for the
low cost that brings so many of us to this line.
The bottom line is that DIY is not just a way of saving costs but a
true hobby, most DIYers never
have a final system, but a
constantly upgrading system.
Where to start
When it is established that you wish to DIY and build your own
speakers you need to do some research, no sorry,
HEAPS of research
into designs and drivers, the longer you research the better your
outcome will suit your needs.
This research is best done online, as the information is readily
available and most of it is free, there are some useful
links to some of these resources on the Links
section of this site. Best place to start is to do a google search
for
"DIY loudspeakers" this will get you an abundance of sites
to search through, look at as much as you can and read
about the projects you look at.
