I have taken a liking to the seas line of drivers and so have found a
few projects
on the net that I can do as well as thought up a few of my own. Here
are my main options sparing the Excel series kits as they are slightly
out of
my price range at the time being, I would like to see how the standard
line compares
as I have before listened to speakers using the excel woofers. I
have taken a liking to the seas kit Njord, it features an 8"
coated paper cone and the
highly regarded 25TFFC tweeter. One reason I like the kit alot is the
simplicity of the
crossover, it has a simple 1st order parallel crossover, this means less distortion
creating
components and also a big money saver. The driver units used in the
design are also a
reasonable price, the sum of the drivers costs would come out at $370
and crossover
would be a nice $30 or so all up. This is the kind of money that I am
looking to spend
on a a new pair of speakers, and I hope that the quality is up to
scratch. My Interest of an MTM has been rekindled as I have
found the Proteus project by
Tony Gee, it is a 2way design using two coated paper seas woofers and
a seas excel
tweeter. It uses a 2nd order series filter. It is a time aligned
design which I was never
sure actually did anything noticeable but after some emails he
explained to me that not
time aligning the drivers in this case would result in a 4.5Khz drop
in response which I
don't desire so I will live with the time aligning design. I will
alter the cabinet design only
to include the stand into the base so that it looks like a full
tower whilst it is only really
a smaller enclosure. I will also work out whether changing the port to
a single round port
as I like round in preference to the two rectangular ones used. If I
was to change the port
placement I would place the port under the lower woofer. My
final seas point of interest is to do a 2 way with a 6.5"
midwoofer and tweeter, there
are a number of options in this category, the two that are the best
documented are the
"Embla" kit by seas using a poly driver, and then a similar
kit of unknown origin with the
same 27TFFC tweeter and an aluminium midwoofer for not much more cost
but a far
greater cost in crossover, about the same amount of money would be
spent on XO as the
woofers, and this to me is not acceptable. As for both designs they
are not high enough
output or efficiency for what I want and also the Aluminium driver one
would make up for
SPL with its detail and transparency it would not when the cost of XO
is included.
