Just because we have FUN...FUN...FUN at DISCOVER VIRGINIA it doesn't
mean that we don't approach some rather serious and important topics, too! In addition to
KAYAKING, FISHING, BIKING, HIKING, OUTRIGGER CANOEING, & PICNICING, we try to incorporate
basic LIFE SKILLS which will prove invaluable as the kids grow and develop. CPR & FIRST AID - While "on location" in the various outdoor sites, we stage REAL LIFE EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. With instruction and insight from individuals certified in CPR & FIRST AID, we teach kids LIFE SAVING techniques and proper EMERGENCY RESPONSES. Naturally, we spend considerable time talking and demonstrating WATER SAFETY precautions, including SAFE BOATING, WATER RESCUE, and DROWNING PREVENTION, we also consider what emergency actions to take in the event of HEAD INJURY, BLEEDING, SNAKE BITES, and a host of other potential accidents, plus other, useful OUTDOOR COMMON SENSE procedures. MAP READING * ORIENTEERING - We teach kids the proper response when LOST or DISOREINTED and more importantly through critical MAP READING SKILLS, we teach them how to prevent becoming lost in the first place. Since we spend so much time in and near the water we identify the tricks to maintaining their orientation. We also introduce some GPS TECHNIQUES to enhance and reinforce their new map reading skills. PHOTOGRAPHY - With a 35MM SLR we point out some of the basic GOOD OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHY techniques and practices. With a new DIGITAL CAMERA, we introduce the kids to the wonders of DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY! COMPUTER SKILLS - Begining with the ON LINE REGISTRATION, and continuing with the DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY and image transfer opportunites, we show kids some REAL and PRACTICAL, COMPUTER USES. Our WEB PAGE offers some great on line, interactive opportunities. Campers will be able to visit our site and DOWNLOAD PICTURES OF THEMSELVES in action the very same day! Maybe even pictures they captured themselves! Also, each week's CLASS of campers will have their OWN PAGE on this DISCOVER VIRGINIA WEB SITE This will be space provided for them to UPLOAD FILES TO BE SAHRED with their friends, parents and other site visitors.
