These two kids probably just spotted a GREAT BLUE HERON, an OSPREY,
a MUSKRAT, OTTER, or even a BALD EAGLE. Yes, we travel in areas so remote that even the once endangered
eagles feel comfortable (although not quite yet a "common sight").
At least once, and sometimes twice each camp week, some form of BOAT TRIP is included. Here, we are cruising TABERNICLE CREEK on the north end of NORTH BAY, near SANDBRIDGE. We are aboard the "BACK BAY BARGE", with Captain DAVE KELLY. This is an absolutely beautiful wetland area with an unbelievable array of wildlife. Around each bend in the various creeks awaits a new discovery. Sometimes we travel south in BACK BAY proper. Other "cruises" are through LINKHORN BAY, THE NARROWS, and CRYSTAL LAKE, all surrounding the beaches and high dunes in FIRST LANDING STATE PARK. New, but equally wonderful "cruises" are slated for the 1998 SEASON. Regardless of location, on every cruise we have our lunches or at least snacks, but always we have our FISHING, CRABBING and SEINE NETTING gear. While the boat trips are relaxing and less strenuous than many of our activities, we don't exactly just "lounge" on the trips. Each trip is focuses on the particular wetland and associated wildlife in which we are exploring. LEARNING and FUN are incorporated throughout each "cruise". We include some basic BOATING SAFETY and of course, PLANT and ANIMAL identification as well as a discussion on WETLAND DYNAMICS. Before each initial launch, we hold a "school circle" to prepare for the trip. The subjects covered include: BOATING: A discussion is held on basic BOAT HANDLING and SAFETY, plus a demonstration covering "what to dos" in the event of a injury, thunderstorm, or other emergency. WILDLIFE/HABITAT: A short, but thorough lecture details the diversity of the particular aquatic environment and stresses the IMPORTANCE and FRAGILITY of the entire ecosystem within which we are about to spend the next several hours. |
