The kids you see kayaking here are having
a great time on one of the area's best kept NATURAL secrets, West Neck Creek.
Frequent kayaking adventures are included. There are several great launch sites right here in Virginia Beach; WEST NECK CREEK, MUNDEN'S POINT, and the NORTH LANDING PRESERVE. West Neck Creek is our favorite because of the seclusion, the beautiful setting, and the the fact that OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE, INC. is already set-up to launch from there. Regardless of which habitat we explore, we plan on a two and one-half to three hour trip. LUNCH is packed on the kayak and usually "devoured" as we "raft" up among the Bald Cypress knees and under the watchful eyes of hundreds of colorful birds or other wetland "critters". Before each initial launch, we hold a "school circle" to prepare for the trip. The subjects covered include: SAFETY: A thorough discussion and demonstration covering "what to do" in the event of a capsize, injury, thunderstorm, or other emergency. KAYAKING: A lecture/demonstration covers paddling techniques, steering, gear/equipment stowage and basic boat handling. WILDLIFE/HABITAT: A short, but thorough talk details the diversity of the freshwater aquatic environment and stresses the IMPORTANCE and FRAGILITY of the entire ecosystem which we are about to explore. |
