In this TIDAL WETLAND in the middle of Summer,
there is no telling what these kids "netted". One thing is certain, they are
INTERESTED in that bucket! And you can bet they are LEARNING! We give the SEINE
NET a try at every opportunity; FRESH WATER, FORESTED WETLANDS, as well as TIDAL
WETLANDS. We tested our luck in LINKHORN BAY, BACK BAY, FALSE CAPE PARK, CURRITUCK
SOUND, NORTH LANDING RIVER, NORTHWEST RIVER, WEST NECK CREEK, KIPTOPEKE STATE PARK
and almost any other place that's wet! There is no better way to emphasize the important role a wetland plays as an AQUATIC NURSERY than to allow the kids to carefully and temporarily capture, examine, and identify dozens of juvenile BLUE CRABS, SPOT, CROAKER, MENHADEN, and numerous other important local sport and commericial species. Part of the fun is that not everything found in the SEINE NET is NOT identified, so the kids are challenged. (Some junvenile fish are very difficult to positively identify.) Among the favorites that are almost always netted and easy to identify, are the PIPE FISH, and an occasional SEAHORSE! SEINE NETTING adventures are usually combined with FISHING and CRABBING opportunities, so while some folks are "netting", others are otherwise engaged. Almost always it dawns on everyone that the best "netting" is around certain WETLAND GRASSES and other AQUATIC PLANTS, so these life forms immediately take on a NEW MEANING and VALUE. At some point in all this, we stop for a picnic, or at least a snack and discuss the recent DISCOVERIES. We usually end the day with a group of budding, ENTHUSIASTIC, and fairly KNOWLEDGABLE ECOLOGISTS! |
