GREAT ARCHITECTURAL

MONUMENTS

The Triumphal Arch,

The Romanian Athenaeum,

The University of Bucharest,

The Senate,

 Bucharest Central University Library,

 Sala Palatului

The Triumphal Arch is one of the most important monuments in Bucharest. It looks like a very tall gate (over 35 meters). It is made of granite. It was built in 1935 in memory of the victory achieved in the First World War. It will be open to the public in the near future. It looks like The Arch of Triumph in Paris.

Every year on December 1st we celebrate our national day. The union of the Romanians (and of all the territories lived by them) with the "mother country" was proclaimed on the 1st of December 1918. The Great Romania was thus achieved.

Every year on this day there is a huge military parade near the Triumphal Arch.

The Romanian Athenaeum is the best concert hall in Bucharest. It was built between 1885 and 1888 with funds raised by public subscription, following the plans of the French architect Albert Galleron.
It looks like a Ionic temple with six columns and a large cupola. Inside you can see a large round concert hall with 1000 places. The hall room is decorated with a fresco that presents the most important moments in our history.
It is worth mentioning that in front of the Romanian Athenaeum is the bronze statue of Mihai Eminescu - the greatest Romanian poet.
In our opinion this is the ideal place for you to listen to classical music in Bucharest.

The University of Bucharest is located in University Square, opposite the Intercontinental hotel and the National Theatre. It was built between 1857-1869 in a neo-classical style, following the plans of the architect Al. Orascu.

In the middle of the square four statues raise imposingly: Ion Heliade Radulescu, Romanian poet and politician (1802-1872), Michael the Brave (on his horse), prince of Wallachia (1595-1601), Gheorghe Lazar (1779-1823), great scientist, founder of the Romanian teaching system and Spiru Haret (1851-1912), doctor in mathematics.

It is worth mentioning that the statue of Ion Heliade Radulescu is made of Carrara marble. Its sculptor Ettore Ferrari also created the statue of Abraham Lincoln in Washinghton D.C. and the statues of Ovidiu in Constanta and Rome.

The Senate

Facing Kretzulescu Church is the former headquarters of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, now home to the Senate. On the 21st of December 1989, Nicolae Ceausescu (a dictator) delivered his final speech from a balcony here.

Next to the Senate as you walk north is Bucharest Central University Library founded by Carol I and opened in 1895. This building was gutted during the 1989 Revolution, but has now been restored.

                                                                                                                                                                          up

On the opposite side of the Revolution Square and behind the Art Museum is the saucer-like dome of Sala Palatului, designed in 1963.

It houses different celebrations.
