Every year on December 1st we celebrate our
national day. The union of the Romanians (and of all the territories lived by
them) with the "mother country" was proclaimed on the 1st of December 1918. The
Great Romania was thus achieved.
Every year on this day there is a huge military parade near the Triumphal Arch.
In the middle of the square four statues raise imposingly: Ion Heliade Radulescu, Romanian poet and politician (1802-1872), Michael the Brave (on his horse), prince of Wallachia (1595-1601), Gheorghe Lazar (1779-1823), great scientist, founder of the Romanian teaching system and Spiru Haret (1851-1912), doctor in mathematics. It is worth mentioning that the statue of Ion Heliade Radulescu is made of Carrara marble. Its sculptor Ettore Ferrari also created the statue of Abraham Lincoln in Washinghton D.C. and the statues of Ovidiu in Constanta and Rome.
Facing Kretzulescu Church is the former headquarters of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, now home to the Senate. On the 21st of December 1989, Nicolae Ceausescu (a dictator) delivered his final speech from a balcony here.
It houses different celebrations.
