Glossary
ADC- Analog-to-Digital
Converter, processes images inside of a digital camera
auto-advance- a feature on
some film cameras that automatically advances from one negative
to the next
binary code- a code of 1's
and 0's based on the amount of light that a digital camera "remembers"
to store the image
CCD- Charge-coupled devices,
have tiny resistors that sample the light that hits them and creates
an image, using red, green, and blue filters to make color. Creates
binary code so the image can be stored.
chemicals- includes stop
bath, developer, and fixer, used to print photos from film negatives
compressed- a file's size
is made smaller, while its quality and resolution are decreased
darkroom- a place where film
negatives are developed with special equipment, including chemicals
(see above), photo paper, and an enlarger
expose- to open the shutter
and let the light
film- a form
of recording images, predecessor to CCDs and memory cards. A roll
of plastic coated with light-sensitive silver halide crystals.
flash- a device, usually
external, which quickly flashes bright light to make a photo brighter
while the film or CCD is being exposed
halide crystals- light sensitive
crystals in the emulsion of film which change tone based on the
amount of light they are exposed to
memory card- a small card
inside of a digital camera that stores pictures, and is reusable
negatives- exposed film which
can be developed and enlarged
point-and-shoot- a non-professional,
amateur camera with a non-interchangeable lens and built-in flash
(if any flash) which can be either digital or film
print- a final product of
negatives; a positive photo on photo paper
resolution- quality of the
image, determined by megapixels in digital photography
shutter- a moving piece of
dark plastic or metal which covers the film until the shutter button
is pressed
shutter button- moves the
shutter to expose the film
shutter latency- the amount
of time between when the shutter button is pressed and when the
shutter actually opens fully to expose the film or CCD
