Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihaan is South Thailand's largest and most important temple. Continously rebuilt and renovated, it is believed to have existed for over 1,000 years. The top spire of the chedi is topped with gold. Underneath the chedi is buried the relics of the Buddha. This temple together with many others, make Nakhon Si Thammarat the most important destination for Buddhist pilgrimage and festivals.
An ancient alphabet used to symbolize Nakhon Si Thammarat. Nakhon Si Thammarat was an ancient kingdom more than a thousand years ago. The name means 'Kingdom of the Sacred Dharma King', refering to the existence of a King and Buddhism as the official religion.
Standing under the North Gate of the old city wall. Only a about 150m of the brick wall remains. During the Ayuthayan Dynastic period, Nakhon Si Thammarat served as a crucial regional capital for the control of Southern Thailand and vassal Malay states. The 'bunga mas' sent by the latter ended up here.
Cotton weaving demonstration. A specialty of Nakhon Si Thammarat is textiles tie-dyed with natural dyes. Other splendid handicraft from this province include nielloware, silverware, liphao basketry (made from a type of climbing vine), yan kaphao fans (made from a type of palm leaf) and shadow puppets.
